\nIt is with great sadness that we report the death of a respected and
\nvalued member of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who was
\nkilled during combat operations in Afghanistan while serving in support
\nof the Global War on Terrorism.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/img>The
\nLAPD has learned through family contacts of the death of 45-year-old
\nSergeant Major Robert J. Cottle, United States Marine Corps Reserve
\n(USMCR).\u00a0 In the near\u00a0 future, the Department of Defense and the USMCR
\nwill formally release his name and the circumstances related to his
\ndeath in accordance with military protocols. Cottle had been deployed
\non active duty since August 2009.\u00a0 He served with the 4th LAR
\nBattalion, Headquarters Company, 4th Marine Division, Camp Pendleton,
\nCalifornia.<\/p>\n

\nCottle was appointed to the LAPD on Sept. 10, 1990.\u00a0 He had been
\nassigned to Metropolitan Division since February 1996 and his most
\nrecent assignment was in \u201cD\u201d Team, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
\nas a Police Officer III+I.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/img>"This
\ndeeply saddens me, especially since I’ve known RJ for over 20 years,\u201d
\nsaid LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.\u00a0 \u201cHe is a fine man and a great example of
\nthe best LAPD has to offer.\u00a0 He will be missed."<\/p>\n

\nWhether Cottle was serving the people of Los Angeles or serving the
\npeople of the United States,\u00a0 he did so with honor, integrity and
\ncommitment.\u00a0 His death will leave a void in the hearts of all who knew
\nand loved him, and his contributions to the Department will be greatly
\nmissed.\u00a0 He is survived by his wife and a 9-month-old daughter.<\/p>\n

\nWe ask that community members keep Officer Cottle\u2019s family members,
