Cottle, United States Marine Corps Reserve<br \/>\n(USMCR).\u00a0 In the near\u00a0 future, the Department of Defense and the USMCR<br \/>\nwill formally release his name and the circumstances related to his<br \/>\ndeath in accordance with military protocols. Cottle had been deployed<br \/>\non active duty since August 2009.\u00a0 He served with the 4th LAR<br \/>\nBattalion, Headquarters Company, 4th Marine Division, Camp Pendleton,<br \/>\nCalifornia.<\/p>\n<p>\nCottle was appointed to the LAPD on Sept. 10, 1990.\u00a0 He had been<br \/>\nassigned to Metropolitan Division since February 1996 and his most<br \/>\nrecent assignment was in \u201cD\u201d Team, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)<br \/>\nas a Police Officer III+I.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"left\" alt=\"\" border=\"2\" height=\"98\" hspace=\"2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lapdonline.org\/assets\/jpeg\/Tank%20and%20I,%20Christmas%20day,%202009%20Shibout%20%282%29.jpg\" vspace=\"2\" width=\"130\"><\/img>&quot;This<br \/>\ndeeply saddens me, especially since I&#8217;ve known RJ for over 20 years,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.\u00a0 \u201cHe is a fine man and a great example of<br \/>\nthe best LAPD has to offer.\u00a0 He will be missed.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>\nWhether Cottle was serving the people of Los Angeles or serving the<br \/>\npeople of the United States,\u00a0 he did so with honor, integrity and<br \/>\ncommitment.\u00a0 His death will leave a void in the hearts of all who knew<br \/>\nand loved him, and his contributions to the Department will be greatly<br \/>\nmissed.\u00a0 He is survived by his wife and a 9-month-old daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\nWe ask that community members keep Officer Cottle\u2019s family members,<br \/>\nfriends and his extended LAPD family in their thoughts and prayers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cottle was Tragically Killed during Military Deployment in Afghanistan Los Angeles:\u00a0 It is with great sadness that we report the death of a respected and valued member of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) who was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan while serving in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
