{"id":483524,"date":"2010-03-29T00:04:00","date_gmt":"2010-03-29T04:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/greenspan-wishes-us-interest-rates-wouldnt-go-up-2010-3"},"modified":"2010-03-29T00:04:00","modified_gmt":"2010-03-29T04:04:00","slug":"greenspan-shocked-that-debt-is-high-and-interest-rates-are-rising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/483524","title":{"rendered":"Greenspan Shocked That Debt Is High And Interest Rates Are Rising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"http:\/\/static.businessinsider.com\/image\/8f7a6c799c90904921f2e500-400-\/alangreenspan-closeup-tbi.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"alangreenspan closeup tbi\" width=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alan Greenspan seems to want to have his cake and eat it too.<\/p>\n<p>In a Bloomberg TV interview, he bemoans the high amounts of U.S. government debt, and says he believes rising treasury yields are a signal that the market is starting to get very worried about America&#8217;s ability to finance itself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601010&amp;sid=a9Q2kWv97Yys\">Bloomberg:<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Higher yields reflect investor concerns over &ldquo;this huge overhang of federal debt which we have never seen before,&rdquo; &#8230; &ldquo;I&rsquo;m very much concerned about the fiscal situation,&rdquo;&#8230; An increase in long-term interest rates &ldquo;will make the housing recovery very difficult to implement and put a dampening on capital investment as well.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&ldquo;I don&rsquo;t like American politics and what&rsquo;s happening,&rdquo; Greenspan said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Historically, there has been &ldquo;a large buffer between the level of our federal debt and our capacity to borrow,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s narrowing. And I&rsquo;m finding it very difficult to look into the future and not worry about that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>What he&#8217;s saying is true to some extent.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, lower interest rates promote growth in debt by making it dirt cheap, while higher rates curb its growth by making it expensive. Thus it&#8217;s a bit rich to hear the man who loved to keep U.S. rates exceptionally low as a form of stimulus complaining about how large America&#8217;s debt has become. In fact, while rising interest rates are a sign of market concern, they might actually be the start of America&#8217;s debt solution, since they will limit the government&#8217;s ability to borrow further.
