{"id":483721,"date":"2010-03-29T05:15:56","date_gmt":"2010-03-29T09:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/faithworld\/?p=12670"},"modified":"2010-03-29T05:15:56","modified_gmt":"2010-03-29T09:15:56","slug":"chanting-haitian-voodoo-celebrants-honor-quake-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/483721","title":{"rendered":"Chanting Haitian voodoo celebrants honor quake dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_12671\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 359px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12671\" title=\"haiti refugees\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/faithworld\/files\/2010\/03\/haiti-refugees-349x232-custom.jpg\" alt=\"haiti refugees\" width=\"349\" height=\"232\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tents for earthquake survivors in the national stadium in Port-au-Prince March 21, 2010\/Eduardo Munoz<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Dressed in white, shaking decorated gourd rattles and singing praises  to <em>&#8220;Olorum Papa&#8221;<\/em> (God the Father), several hundred practitioners of  Haiti&#8217;s voodoo religion held a public ceremony on Sunday to honor those  killed in the January 12 earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>While several Christian ceremonies have been held to mourn the  hundreds of thousands of quake dead, this was the first national  commemoration by Haiti&#8217;s voodoo religion, which has had to defend itself  against accusations by some Evangelical preachers that it somehow  caused the deadly natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of Haiti&#8217;s nearly 10 million people are believed  to practice voodoo, a religion brought from West Africa several  centuries ago by slaves forced to work on the plantations of their white  masters in what was then the rich French Caribbean colony of Saint  Domingue.
