Despite Obama&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/obama.3cdn.net\/0080cc578614b42284_2a0mvyxpz.pdf\">pledge<\/a> to limit special influence participation in his administration &#8212; he&#8217;s sought to &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/11\/26\/AR2009112602362.html\">prohibit lobbyists<\/a> from serving on federal advisory panels, for example &#8212; a half-dozen of these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/president-obama-announces-recess-appointments-key-administration-positions\">new appointees<\/a> have strong union or special interest ties, or are themselves former registered lobbyists, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\">Center for Responsive Politics<\/a> finds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Among them: Craig Becker, a union lawyer who Obama placed on the National Labor Relations Board. Jeffrey A. Goldstein, Obama&#8217;s nominee for assistant treasury secretary, has worked for a variety of private political influence peddlers, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/revolving\/rev_summary.php?id=71332\">is a member<\/a> of OpenSecrets.org&#8217;s &#8220;Revolving Door&#8221; database. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/revolving\/rev_summary.php?id=10702\">Eric L. Hirschhorn<\/a>, a Department of Commerce under secretary appointee, is a former federal lobbyist, as is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/lobbyist.php?lname=Punke%2C%20Michael%20W&amp;id=Y00000017710&amp;year=2008\">Michael W. Punke<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2009\/09\/major-obama-campaign-bundlers.html\">deputy trade representative appointee<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/lobbyist.php?lname=Berrien%2C%20Jacqueline&amp;id=Y00000417650&amp;year=2005\">Jacqueline Berrien<\/a>, who will now serve as chairwoman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.&nbsp;Chief agricultural negotiator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/revolving\/rev_summary.php?id=71549\">Israel Siddiqui<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/lobbyist.php?lname=Siddiqui%2C%20Isi&amp;id=Y00000177780&amp;year=2003\">former lobbyist<\/a> for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/clientsum.php?lname=CropLife+America&amp;year=2009\">CropLife America<\/a>, is also on Obama&#8217;s list.<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/appleipad.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"appleipad.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/assets_c\/2010\/03\/appleipad-thumb-120x145-732.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"145\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><b>APPLE&#8217;s iLOBBY:<\/b>&nbsp;With computer giant Apple poised to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/clientsum.php?lname=Apple+Inc&amp;year=2009\">release<\/a> its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zmescience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/verizon-prepping-the-ipad.jpg\">iPad<\/a> device, its worth noting that the company has in recent years accelerated its federal lobbying efforts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/clientsum.php?year=2005&amp;lname=Apple+Inc&amp;id=\">spending<\/a> at least $1.5 million on them in both 2008 and 2009. Keep an eye on the company this year, as it has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/video\/10702862\/apple-ipad-sales-surge-for-now.html#72086400001\">hundreds of thousands<\/a> of new reasons to make sure that government is fostering &#8212; or isn&#8217;t threatening &#8212; its corporate interests. (Lobbying reports for the first quarter of this year are released late next month.) And what were the targets of Apple&#8217;s lobbying efforts in 2009? Oh, just 21 different <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/clientbills.php?year=2009&amp;lname=Apple+Inc&amp;id=\">congressional bills<\/a> and seven government <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/clientagns.php?lname=Apple+Inc&amp;year=2009\">agencies or bodies<\/a>. Even so, and although its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/clientlbs.php?lname=Apple+Inc&amp;year=2009\">lobbying force<\/a> is certainly powerful, Apple ranked just 21st in 2009 lobbying expenditures a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/indusclient.php?lname=B12&amp;year=2009\">mong computer and Internet companies<\/a>, we find.
