{"id":486415,"date":"2010-03-29T15:22:41","date_gmt":"2010-03-29T19:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2010\/03\/apples-ipad-advertising-aspirations\/38159\/"},"modified":"2010-03-29T15:22:41","modified_gmt":"2010-03-29T19:22:41","slug":"apples-ipad-advertising-aspirations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/486415","title":{"rendered":"Apple&#8217;s iPad Advertising Aspirations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Of all the companies <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"95\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"133\" multilinks-offsettop=\"10\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704266504575141822475202814.html\">hoping to benefit<\/a> from the potential of the iPad as an advertising platform, the biggest may be Apple itself.<\/p>\n<p>The company is planning to introduce a new mobile advertising system on April 7th, four days after <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"57\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"152\" multilinks-offsettop=\"74\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\">the iPad&#8217;s<\/a> official launch, according to <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"184\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"374\" multilinks-offsettop=\"74\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mediapost.com\/publications\/?fa=Articles.showArticle&amp;art_aid=125076\">MediaPost&#8217;s Online Media Daily<\/a>. Such a system would accelerate an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2010\/03\/google-and-apple-lead-war-for-mobile-advertising\/36963\/\">already-tense fight<\/a> between Apple and Google for dominance of the mobile advertising market, which could be worth as much as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eweek.com\/c\/a\/Mobile-and-Wireless\/Apple-Google-Rivalry-Boosting-Mobile-Web-20-Growth-Report-739738\/\">$6 billion by 2014<\/a>, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/magazine\/entrepreneur\/2010\/march\/204976.html\">just under $1 billion<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<p>Details of the system are few and far between, but speculation abounds. Here&#8217;s FastCompany&#8217;s Kit Eaton&#8217;s take:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The result is likely to be an uber-precise, user-targeting ad placement<br \/>\nsystem with an associated analytics package that Apple may wind into<br \/>\nthe iPhone&#8217;s code so developers can access it through apps.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Establishing such a system could prove contentious, given that Google <a href=\"http:\/\/digital.venturebeat.com\/2010\/03\/01\/google-location-ads\/\">secured<\/a> a patent on location-based advertising just this month. Last November, Google <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"94\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"55\" multilinks-offsettop=\"218\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2009\/11\/09\/google-acquires-admob\/\">acquired AdMob<\/a>, a mobile advertising platform that <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"140\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"351\" multilinks-offsettop=\"218\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=afcIzFP3iNrY\">Apple had been courting<\/a> as well. In January, Apple <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"204\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"100\" multilinks-offsettop=\"234\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2010\/01\/05\/apple-quattro-advertising-google-cmo-network-apple-mobile-ads.html\">shocked the advertising community<\/a><br \/>\nby buying Quattro Wireless, a mobile advertising developer on which the<br \/>\nnew system is reportedly based. On Friday, Jobs and Google CEO Eric<br \/>\nSchmidt were <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"121\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"253\" multilinks-offsettop=\"266\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5503004\/steve-jobs-and-eric-schmidt-spotted-together-again-photos?skyline=true&amp;s=i\">spotted having coffee<\/a>, suggesting the Apple-Google relationship may be on the mends, but their body language <a multilinks-offsetheight=\"16\" multilinks-offsetwidth=\"111\" multilinks-offsetleft=\"283\" multilinks-offsettop=\"282\" multilinks-visible=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5503192\/so-awkward-steve-jobs-and-eric-schmidts-body-language-analyzed\">indicated otherwise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/metrics.admob.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/AdMob-Mobile-Metrics-Feb-10.pdf\">According to a report by AdMob<\/a> (pdf), the iPhone was running on 44 percent of U.S.<br \/>\nsmartphones last month and Android was running on 42 percent.
