{"id":489317,"date":"2010-03-30T11:07:58","date_gmt":"2010-03-30T15:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/?p=22034"},"modified":"2010-03-30T11:07:58","modified_gmt":"2010-03-30T15:07:58","slug":"the-alliance-for-energy-and-economic-growth-is-a-bunch-of-right-wing-pollutocrats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/489317","title":{"rendered":"The Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth is a bunch of right-wing pollutocrats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fourteen men representing the Alliance for Energy and  Economic Growth (AEEG) are <a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/list\/92\/Industry_attendees_at_the_Senate%27s_March_9_climate_meeting\">meeting<\/a> with Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), John Kerry (D-MA), and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) to <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/11\/negotiating-with-deniers\/\">negotiate  the terms<\/a> of comprehensive <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/18\/kerry-graham-lieberman-rumors\/\">climate  and clean energy legislation<\/a>.\u00a0 Brad Johnson has the <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/26\/aeeg-pollutocrats\/\">background<\/a> of this remarkably non-diverse group.<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>Per Matt Yglesias\u2019s note that the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/yglesias.thinkprogress.org\/archives\/2010\/03\/risk-aversion-and-chess.php\">male-dominated nature<\/a> of Wall Street is a source of dysfunction,\u201d meet the AEEG:<br \/>\n<span id=\"more-22034\"><\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth\" src=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/AEEG_1.png\" alt=\"Alliance for Energy and Economic Growth\" width=\"518\" height=\"583\" \/><br \/>\nLeft to right, top to bottom: David N. May, Dave McCurdy.<br \/>\nThese<\/p>\n<p>The AEEG is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce-managed working group of the trade associations representing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Alliance_for_Energy_and_Economic_Growth\">America\u2019s carbon-pollution industries<\/a>, founded in 2001.   Five of these AEEG representatives sit on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/org\/44220\/Association_Committee_of_100\">Association Committee of 100<\/a>, helping shape the organization\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n<p>Five of the groups are <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/11\/negotiating-with-deniers\/\">suing to block the Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s scientific finding<\/a> that greenhouse gases are harmful pollutants \u2014 the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Petroleum Institute, the National Association of Manufacturers, the Portland Cement Association, and the American Farm Bureau Federation. The American Petroleum Institute ran an <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/08\/13\/leak-big-oil-clean-energy\/\">astroturf campaign<\/a> against the House climate legislation last year, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce called for a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2009\/08\/25\/chamber-scopes-climate-trial\/\">Scopes monkey trial<\/a>\u201d on the science of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The least conservative of the industry lobbyists are <a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/person\/14133\/Dave_McCurdy\">Dave McCurdy<\/a> of the Alliance of Auto Manufacturers, a former New Democrat congressman from Oklahoma (and Wonk Room guest blogger), and former general <a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/person\/44963\/Evan_R_Gaddis\">Evan Gaddis<\/a> of the National Electric Manufacturers Association. Seven of the lobbyists were <a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/list\/92\/Industry_attendees_at_the_Senate%27s_March_9_climate_meeting#giving\">George W. Bush contributors<\/a>, and two others \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/person\/50567\/Erik_Heilman\">Erik Heilman<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/littlesis.org\/person\/50572\/Rich_Nolan\">Rich Nolan<\/a> \u2014 were Republican staffers. The overall political contributions of these fourteen men is whoppingly Republican, either as a direct contribution or funneled through conservative industry political action committees.
