Thompson, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/story\/feds-were-investigating-baton-rouge-police-too\/\">ProPublica<\/a><\/i>\n<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the Baton Rouge Police<br \/>\nDepartment&#8217;s actions in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.2theadvocate.com\/news\/89241802.html?index=1&amp;c=y\">according<br \/>\n to the Baton Rouge Advocate<\/a>. The newspaper says Alejandro Miyar, a<br \/>\nspokesperson for Justice Department&#8217;s Civil Rights Division,<br \/>\nacknowledged the probe on Thursday.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWord of the federal investigation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.2theadvocate.com\/news\/87599912.html\">follows reports<\/a><br \/>\n in the Advocate detailing allegations that Baton Rouge police<br \/>\n&#8220;routinely harassed black people, resorted to unnecessary violence and<br \/>\nconducted illegal searches in the days after Hurricane Katrina.&#8221; The<br \/>\nstories, based on complaints made by out-of-state police sent to<br \/>\nLouisiana to assist local officers, have been challenged by Baton Rouge<br \/>\npolice officials.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe new probe further expands the Justice Department&#8217;s workload in the<br \/>\nstate. Prosecutors are already examining a string of incidents in which<br \/>\nNew Orleans Police Department <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/\">officers<br \/>\n shot at least 10 civilians<\/a> during the week after Katrina roared<br \/>\nashore. Two former New Orleans cops recently pleaded guilty to federal<br \/>\ncharges stemming from the shooting of six people on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/case\/topic\/case-six\">Danziger<br \/>\nBridge<\/a> on Sept. 4, 2005.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWith our partners at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/crime\/law_and_disorder\/\">New Orleans<br \/>\nTimes-Picayune<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/law-disorder\/\">PBS<br \/>\n&#8220;Frontline,&#8221;<\/a> ProPublica scrutinized the NOPD in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/\">&#8220;Law &amp; Disorder,&#8221;<\/a> a<br \/>\nseries of stories looking at the shootings of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/case\/topic\/case-two\">Matthew<br \/>\nMcDonald<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/case\/topic\/case-four\">Keenon McCann<\/a><br \/>\n and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/case\/topic\/case-three\">Danny<br \/>\n Brumfield<\/a>.
