The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating the Baton Rouge Police
\nDepartment’s actions in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, according
\n to the Baton Rouge Advocate<\/a>. The newspaper says Alejandro Miyar, a
\nspokesperson for Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division,
\nacknowledged the probe on Thursday. \n<\/p>\n

\nWord of the federal investigation follows reports<\/a>
\n in the Advocate detailing allegations that Baton Rouge police
\n“routinely harassed black people, resorted to unnecessary violence and
\nconducted illegal searches in the days after Hurricane Katrina.” The
\nstories, based on complaints made by out-of-state police sent to
\nLouisiana to assist local officers, have been challenged by Baton Rouge
\npolice officials.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe new probe further expands the Justice Department’s workload in the
\nstate. Prosecutors are already examining a string of incidents in which
\nNew Orleans Police Department officers
\n shot at least 10 civilians<\/a> during the week after Katrina roared
\nashore. Two former New Orleans cops recently pleaded guilty to federal
\ncharges stemming from the shooting of six people on the Danziger
\nBridge<\/a> on Sept. 4, 2005.\n<\/p>\n
