{"id":49820,"date":"2009-11-17T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-11-17T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goforward.harpercollege.edu\/page.cfm?p=4363&newsid=887"},"modified":"2009-11-17T17:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-11-17T22:00:00","slug":"eighty-six-year-old-harper-student-displays-work-in-rare-solo-art-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/49820","title":{"rendered":"Eighty-Six-Year-Old Harper Student Displays Work in Rare Solo Art Exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(PALATINE, IL) One of Harper College&rsquo;s most popular art students &ndash; an 86-year-old retired industrial designer who&rsquo;s taken Harper art classes for two decades &ndash; will celebrate the opening of his first-ever art exhibit on Wednesday, November 18, in Harper&rsquo;s Art Exhibition Space, Room C200, Building C.<\/p>\n<p>The show pays tribute to Bernard &ldquo;Bernie&rdquo; Bluestein&rsquo;s 20-year artistic journey, which saw him exploring jewelry, ceramics, drawing and more as he took class after class at the College &ndash; usually completing more than one course each semester. The exhibit will focus on sculpture, his favorite medium, and will include pieces from his &ldquo;Needles&rdquo; series, a tribute to his tailor father and seamstress mother.<\/p>\n<p>This is only the second time in Harper&rsquo;s history that a current student has exhibited works in a solo show.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&rsquo;m happy about it,&rdquo; says Bluestein, of Schaumburg. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m absolutely delighted to have been asked.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 30 works will be displayed in the free exhibit. <\/p>\n<p>Bluestein, a World War II veteran, took his first Harper art class after retiring, hoping to find a new hobby. He now visits campus five days a week.
