But the stories are too disturbing for that.  <\/p>\n<p>The ultra-conservative clergy of the Church, epitomized by the current Pope have completely <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/papal-ally-accused-of-ritual-beatings-1932764.html\">brought it on themselves<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class='wbq'>\n<p>The child abuse scandal rocking the Catholic Church widened yesterday as a leading German bishop personally appointed by Pope Benedict was accused of ritually beating and punching children at a church-run home during the late 1970s and early 1980s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And like Church apologist and professional angry person <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/5506599\/best-new-catholic-church-defense-its-not-pedophilia-if-the-boys-were-post+pubescent\">Bill Donohue<\/a>, this same Clergyman, Walter Mixa, said all the Church&#8217;s problems were about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/papal-ally-accused-of-ritual-beatings-1932764.html\">the &quot;sexual revolution&quot;<\/a> (i.e. divorces and &quot;the gay&quot;).<\/p>\n<p>But actually, as is usually the case, it&#8217;s about the power:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class='wbq'>\n<p>&quot;The children whose parents never visited the home were the ones who were beaten most,&quot; said one former resident<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course they were.<\/p>\n<p class=\"akst_link\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/share-this\/share-icon-16x16.gif\" alt=\"Share This icon\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/?p=76120&amp;akst_action=share-this\"  title=\"Email, post to del.icio.us, etc.\" id=\"akst_link_76120\" class=\"akst_share_link\" rel=\"noindex nofollow\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I know as a non-religious type (I&#8217;m agnostic because I just don&#8217;t care) I would be expected to feel some schadenfreude in the troubles of the Catholic Church.
