{"id":499575,"date":"2010-04-01T10:16:02","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/?p=81174"},"modified":"2010-04-01T10:16:02","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:16:02","slug":"report-cia-deputy-director-helped-cover-up-detainee-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/499575","title":{"rendered":"Report: CIA Deputy Director Helped Cover Up Detainee Death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s a shocking account about Steve Kappes, then the powerful associate deputy CIA director for operations, provided by The Washington Post&#8217;s Jeff Stein in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonian.com\/articles\/people\/15265.html\">new Washingtonian profile<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/24727\/john-brennan-is-set-to-be-really-powerful\">powerful and widely respected deputy director<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>According to an internal investigation, [Kappes] helped tailor the agency\u2019s paper trail regarding the death of a detainee at a secret CIA interrogation facility in Afghanistan, known internally as the Salt Pit.<span id=\"more-81174\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The detainee froze to death after being doused with water, stripped naked, and left alone overnight, according to reports in the\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times.<\/em> He was secretly buried and his death kept \u201coff-the-books,\u201d the\u00a0<em>Post<\/em> said.<\/p>\n<p>According to two former officials who read a CIA inspector general\u2019s report on the incident, Kappes coached the base chief\u2014whose identity is being withheld at the request of the CIA\u2014on how to respond to the agency\u2019s investigators. They would report it as an accident.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A CIA spokesman vigorously denied all aspects of that account to Stein, whose sources stand by it.
