Kibbutz Yarok, located in Santa Rosa, California, now has the opportunity to receive a grant through Hazon &#8211; but to win, it needs your votes! <\/p>\n<p>To vote, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hazon.org\/go.php?q=\/rides\/2010CA\/grantsVoting.php\">Hazon&#8217;s California Ride Grants Voting page<\/a> and scroll down to the &#8220;Camp Newman-Swig, Kibbutz Yarok&#8221; box to vote. As of this morning, Kibbutz Yarok is ranked in first place! Voting closes at the end of the day tomorrow, when the top 10 organizations with the most votes will be eligible to receive grants from the Hazon California Ride.<\/p>\n<p>        <span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KibbutzYarok.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.rj.org\/rac\/BAswigkibbutz2.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px; float: right;\" width=\"216\" height=\"278\" \/><\/span>At Kibbutz Yarok, more than 2,000 Jewish campers yearly learn<br \/>\nto connect Judaism and Jewish values to their environment by working in<br \/>\nan organic garden, where they&#8217;re taught sustainable practices like<br \/>\ncomposting, water conservation, and farming techniques. Campers also<br \/>\ngrow their own herbs and vegetables mentioned in the Torah and learn to<br \/>\ncare for food-producing animals; the food and vegetables culled on<br \/>\nKibbutz Yarok are then served to the entire camp. Campers also engineer<br \/>\nand construct energy-efficient mud huts, made entirely of recycled<br \/>\nmaterials or materials of the earth. <\/p>\n<p>Grants this year &#8211; including funds from Hazon, if Camp Newman wins &#8211;<br \/>\nwill allow Kibbutz Yarok to make use of a small lake, teaching campers<br \/>\nfirst-hand about solar energy and lighting, as well as to enhance and<br \/>\nenlarge the organic garden and complete construction of a prayer site<br \/>\noverlooking the lake. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hazon.org\/go.php?q=\/rides\/2010CA\/grantsVoting.php\">Voting is easy<\/a> and will help ensure that Jewish campers learn the importance of <i>l&#8217;avod v l&#8217;shomreh<\/i>, &#8220;to till and to tend&#8221; the land (Genesis 2:15).<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to check out the other projects up for grants, too, because<br \/>\nKibbutz Yarok is in good company. Among the other nominees are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kibbutzlotan.com\/\">Kibbutz Lotan<\/a>, the model<br \/>\nfor Kibbutz Yarok. Kibbutz Lotan&#8217;s Green Apprenticeship Scholarship<br \/>\nFund in Israel trains young professionals in environmental and<br \/>\nsustainable practices and community-building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptbe.org\/\">Peninsula Temple Beth El<\/a>&#8216;s<br \/>\nTemple Community Garden. This Reform synagogue in San Mateo,<br \/>\nCalifornia, hopes to raise environmental awareness by building a<br \/>\ncommunity garden and compost area that brings the congregation&#8217;s<br \/>\ndifferent groups together to share in the responsibility of tending to<br \/>\nit.<\/li>\n<li>\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utzedek.org\/index.php\">Uri L&#8217;Tzedek&#8217;s<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utzedek.org\/tavhayosher.html\">Tav HaYosher<\/a>,<br \/>\nor Ethical Seal.
