{"id":500502,"date":"2010-04-01T10:00:19","date_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/?p=41791"},"modified":"2010-04-01T10:00:19","modified_gmt":"2010-04-01T14:00:19","slug":"sisters-in-arms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/500502","title":{"rendered":"Sisters in arms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cOur grandmothers had gone about with books poised on their heads, we felt very modern to have substituted fencing. \u201c &#8211; Mosette Stafford Vaughn, Radcliffe College Class of 1891.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Qualification for the NCAA Championships has become something of a ritual for recent members of the Harvard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocrimson.com\/sports\/wfencing\/index\">women\u2019s fencing team<\/a>, a far cry from the sports origins on campus dating back to 1888, but not far removed from the year the team officially came into being in 1974. Back then, team Captain Sara Kimball \u201976, described as a \u201ccolorful, temperamental character, not easily forgotten by those who encountered her,\u201d helped lead a resurgence of a competitive team that was tempered through hard work, perseverance, and no shortage of team spirit<\/p>\n<p>Much the same could be said of epeeist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocrimson.com\/sports\/wfencing\/2009-10\/bios\/mills_noam\">Noam Mills<\/a> \u201912, current captain of the women\u2019s team and member of the Israeli Olympic Team that competed in Beijing in 2008. For Mills, intercollegiate fencing has helped change her perspective on the sport, and credits her teammates with making the transition from Israel to Harvard an easy one. \u201cIt\u2019s very different (in a good way) when I have teammates to share the joy of winning and the agony of losing with, \u201c Mills says.<\/p>\n<p>Harvard University recently played host to the 2010 NCAA Fencing Championships, being held from March 25\u201328 at the Gordon Indoor Track. Harvard&#8217;s Caroline Vloka &#8216;12 won the national title in Women&#8217;s Sabre, while her teammate Mills finished second in Women&#8217;s \u00c9p\u00e9e.
