As Chicago&#8217;s period-instrument orchestra, it has been hailed by critics and audiences and has gained a reputation as one of the most exciting period-instrument ensembles in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p\nclass=\"style7\">&#8220;Baroque Band is delighted to be working with COT on this exciting project,&#8221; said Mr. Clarke.\u00a0 &#8220;Using period instruments adds a vitality and articulation that can be lacking using modern equivalents. Whilst Cavalli, Bach, and Handel would undoubtedly have written very differently if they were alive today we must remember we are bringing the piece to an audience many of whom will be hearing it for the very first time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p\nclass=\"style7\">This comic opera cleverly mixes the myth of &#8220;Jason and the Argonauts&#8221; with bawdy humor centered around the love triangle of Jason, Medea and Isifile.\u00a0 The look of the production will be inspired by the classic James Bond films of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jason<\/em> <span\nclass=\"style7\">will be led by conductor Christian Curnyn, a rising star in the field of early music.\u00a0 Mr. Curnyn founded the Early Opera Company, an ensemble dedicated to the performance of baroque opera using period instruments.\u00a0 In the fall of 2008 he made his English National Opera debut conducting a new production of Handel&#8217;s <em>Partenope<\/em>\u2014which won the Olivier Award (UK) for Best New Opera Production.\u00a0 In April of last year, he conducted performances of Purcell&#8217;s <em>Dido and Aeneas<\/em>, also at the English National Opera<em>.<\/em> \u00a0Mr. Curnyn makes his New York City Opera debut on April 3 with <em>Partenope<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p\nclass=\"style7\">Directing <strong><em>Jason <\/em><\/strong>is <strong>Justin Way<\/strong>.\u00a0 This will be his third production with Chicago Opera Theater after his triumphant <strong><em>Orlando<\/em><\/strong> in 2008 and the audience favorite <strong><em>Abduction from the Seraglio<\/em><\/strong> in 2006.\u00a0 Mr. Way just finished a run of <em>La boh\u00e8me<\/em> at the Minnesota Opera and earlier this year directed<em> Carmen<\/em> at the Canadian Opera Company.\u00a0 He works regularly at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opera Australia, Center City Opera, and Pinchgut Opera.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The set designer is <strong>Anka Lupes<\/strong>, who will make her Chicago Opera Theater debut with the first opera of the 2010 Season, <strong><em>Moses in Egypt<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The costume designer is <strong>Kimm Kovac<\/strong>, who has worked with Justin Way on both <strong><em>Orlando<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Abduction from the Seraglio<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Returning to Chicago Opera Theater from 2009 is lighting designer <strong>Keith Parham<\/strong>.\u00a0 He is a company member of TUTA Theatre, and has worked at The Public Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, and the Writers&#8217; Theatre, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>Cavalli&#8217;s <strong><em>Jason <\/em><\/strong>stars <strong>Franco Fagioli<\/strong> (countertenor) making his North American debut in the title role. General Director <strong>Brian Dickie<\/strong> discovered Fagioli when traveling to Argentina during auditions of the <strong>Bertelsmann Foundation&#8217;s Neue Stimmen Competition<\/strong>. It marked the first time a countertenor made the finals of this prestigious singing contest, and Mr. Fagioli went on to win the top prize. Since then, he has begun an international career, most notably at the Bonn Opera, Teatro Colon, and Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Champs-Elys\u00e9es, as well as in the title role in Handel&#8217;s <em>Giulio Cesare<\/em> in Zurich, Oslo and Karlsruhe.<\/p>\n<p\nclass=\"style7\">Singing the role of Medea is <strong>Sasha Cooke<\/strong> (mezzo-soprano).\u00a0 Ms. Cooke starred as Kitty Oppenheimer in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of John Adams&#8217; <em>Doctor Atomic<\/em>, and sang this past November in Mendelssohn&#8217;s<em> A Midsummer Night&#8217;s Dream<\/em> at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.\u00a0 <strong>Grazia Doronzio<\/strong> (soprano), who sings Isifile, made her Metropolitan Opera debut last season as Countess Ceprano in <em>Rigoletto<\/em>, and recently sang with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the Mozart <em>Requiem<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Ms. Cooke and Ms. Doronzio are recent graduates of the Met&#8217;s Lindemann Young Artist Program.\u00a0\u00a0 The role of Egeo will be sung by <strong>Vale Rideout<\/strong> (tenor), whose engagements in 2010 included Boston Lyric Opera (<em>Turn of the Screw<\/em>), Nashville Opera (<em>The Fall of the House of Usher<\/em>) and the upcoming <em>Elmer Gantry<\/em> at the Florentine Opera.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to Chicago Opera Theater this season is <strong>Andriana Chuchman<\/strong> (soprano) as Alinda and <strong>Andrew Funk<\/strong> (bass) as Besso.\u00a0 Ms. Chuchman sang Dorinda in COT&#8217;s 2008 production of <strong><em>Orlando<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 The <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> said she &#8220;sang with winning freshness, sparkle and charm; you didn&#8217;t want to take your eyes off her.&#8221; Mr. Funk returns to COT after singing Commendatore in COT\u2019s 2008 production of <strong><em>Don Giovanni<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 His previous COT appearances were in <strong><em>Noah\u2019s Flood<\/em><\/strong> (2002) and <strong><em>Orfeo<\/em><\/strong> (2000), which went on to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2003.<\/p>\n<div><span\nclass=\"style7\"><span\nclass=\"style7\"><strong>Julius Ahn<\/strong> (tenor, Demo), <strong>Evan Boyer<\/strong> (bass, Oreste) and <strong>Tyler Nelson<\/strong> (tenor, Delfa) complete the cast.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span\nclass=\"style7\"><span\nclass=\"style7\"><strong><em>Jason<\/em> runs for four performances only on April 24, 28, 30, and May 2, 2010 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park, 205 East Randolph Drive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p\nclass=\"style7\"><strong>Season Subscriptions for the 2010 Spring Festival Season range from $90-$345 and include a ticket to <em>Jason <\/em>(<em>Giasone<\/em>), as well as Rossini\u2019s <em>Moses in Egypt<\/em> and Jake Heggie\u2019s <em>Three Decembers<\/em>.\u00a0 \u00a0Single tickets are also on sale, and range from $30-$120.\u00a0 COT also offers a half-off discounted student rate in most sections.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p\nclass=\"style10\"><span\nclass=\"style7\">Tickets may be purchased at Chicago Opera Theater: <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.chicagooperatheater.org\/\" rel='nofollow'>ChicagoOperaTheater.org<\/a> or 312.704.8414.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Tickets may also be purchased at the Harris Theater:\u00a0 <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.harristheaterchicago.org\/\" rel='nofollow'>HarrisTheaterChicago.org<\/a> or 312.334.7777.<\/span><\/p>\n<p\nclass=\"style7\"><em>Jason <\/em>is generously supported by <strong>The Andrew W.
