{"id":506955,"date":"2010-04-02T10:23:44","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T14:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef01347f97ea5a970c"},"modified":"2010-04-02T10:25:37","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T14:25:37","slug":"santa-anas-a-particular-threat-in-some-southern-california-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/506955","title":{"rendered":"Santa Anas a particular threat in some Southern California areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"holder\">\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"middle\">\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"488\" src=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/media\/graphic\/2010-04\/53057677.jpg\" width=\"600\"><\/img><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Why does Malibu seem to erupt in flames every fall, while most of Los<br \/>\nAngeles, which has its share of houses clinging to brushy hillsides,<br \/>\ndoes not?<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\nThe reason, according to a new <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.agu.org\/?view=article&amp;uri=\/journals\/gl\/gl1004\/2009GL041735\/2009GL041735.xml&amp;t=2010%2Cmoritz\">study<\/a>, is blowing in the wind.<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\nResearchers have developed the first high-resolution map of Santa Ana<br \/>\nwind events, showing that the hot, dry blasts don&#8217;t sweep uniformly<br \/>\nacross the Southland and that the danger of large, wind-whipped<br \/>\nwildfires is therefore greater in some parts of the region than others.<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\nGuided by local topography, the seasonal Santa Anas follow certain corridors to the sea, consistently skirting other areas.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/br><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n&quot;Most people, think, &#8216;Ah, it&#8217;s a Santa Ana day, Southern California is<br \/>\nin trouble,&#8217; and that is true,&quot; said Max Moritz, the study&#8217;s lead<br \/>\nauthor and co-director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/firecenter.berkeley.edu\/\">UC Berkeley Center for Fire Research and Outreach<\/a>. &quot;But there is much more spatial difference in that story, much more diversity.&quot;<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\nThe paper, published February in the online version of Geophysical<br \/>\nResearch Letters, includes a map marked with distinct bands outlining<br \/>\nthe favored Santa Ana routes.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/br><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n&quot;The Santa Monica Mountains and the Malibu area are just hammered,&quot;<br \/>\nMoritz said. &quot;Then the whole L.A. Basin to the south of there is<br \/>\nactually in a sheltered window.
