\"\"<\/em>After Greenpeace detailed the efforts of the Koch Industries’ billionaire brothers to pollute energy policy <\/a>and deny the threat of global warming, Koch Industries communications director Melissa Cohlmia attempted to greenwash their record<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Both a free society and the scientific method require an open and honest airing of all sides, not demonizing and silencing those with whom you disagree. We\u2019ve strived to encourage an intellectually honest debate on the scientific basis for claims of harm from greenhouse gases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Americans for Prosperity \u2014 founded, funded, and overseen by David Koch \u2014 claims to be trying to build that \u201cfree society\u201d by \u201ceducating citizens<\/a> about economic policy and mobilizing those citizens as advocates in the public policy process.\u201d So far, they\u2019re not doing a very good job of engaging in an \u201cintellectually honest debate\u201d without \u201cdemonizing and silencing those with whom you disagree\u201d:<\/p>\n

\u2018Hitler Youth.\u2019<\/strong> At an Americans for Prosperity event in December 2009, guest speaker Christopher Monckton called youth climate activists \u201cHitler Youth.\u201d He told a Jewish youth climate activist whose grandparents escaped the Nazis that he was \u201cHitler Youth,\u201d and that \u201cyou people don\u2019t care\u201d that \u201cmillions are dying in third world countries.\u201d Americans for Prosperity again featured Christopher Monckton<\/a> at a regional summit in March 2010. \u2018Radical Global Warming Agenda.\u2019<\/strong> \u201cPresident Obama is at again,\u201d the Americans for Prosperity Regulation Reality Tour warns, with a \u201cradical global warming agenda\u201d by \u201cunelected bureaucrats regulating our life,\u201d \u201cignoring the entire democratic process all together.\u201d Supposed threats of \u201cEPA\u2019s power grab\u201d include \u201cGrass Mileage Standards,\u201d \u201cGovernment Control of your Thermostat,\u201d \u201cChurches would need EPA Permits,\u201d and The tour features \u201cEPA Carbon Cops\u201d who want to punish you if you \u201copened your refrigerator\u201d or \u201cdrove a car.\u201d [RegulationReality.com<\/a>]<\/p>\n

\u2018Al Gore\u2019s Global Warming Alarmism.\u2019<\/strong> The Americans for Prosperity Hot Air Tour told people to \u201crally against Al Gore\u2019s global warming alarmism<\/a>\u201d and \u201cpropaganda advanced by global warming alarmists,\u201d claiming \u201cglobal warming alarmism\u201d means \u201cfewer jobs,\u201d \u201cless freedom,\u201d and a \u201cgovernment that controls your home thermostat remotely.\u201d The Hot Air Tour flew a balloon over Al Gore\u2019s \u201cenergy-guzzling mansion\u201d in Tennessee with the message \u201cGlobal Warming Alarmism.\u201d [HotAirTour.org<\/a>]<\/p>\n

\u2018We Might As Well Forget Freedom.\u2019<\/strong> The Americans for Prosperity Hot Air Tour says that \u201cfar left environmentalists\u201d are \u201cradicals\u201d with a \u201cradical Global Warming ideology that claims people are the problem\u201d who \u201cwant GOVERNMENT to force us to drive less and live in smaller homes while killing jobs that help grow our economy\u201d and \u201cwant GOVERNMENT dictating our lives.\u201d [HotAirTour.org<\/a>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Cohlmia told the Wonk Room that \u201cAFP is an independent organization and Koch companies do not in any way direct their activities.\u201d This is a remarkable claim, as Koch Industries executive vice presidents and directors Charles Koch and Richard Fink are also directors of the Americans for Prosperity Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n
