Subjects run the gamut ranging from politics to what we’re making for breakfast the following morning. They’re always great gatherings and something I wouldn’t change for the world. About mid-way through the meal the subject turned towards automobiles. My Dad is a big car guy, but tends to lead towards things of a German persuasion. Me, I like American stuff. There is no right or wrong here because when it comes to cars, it’s all about personal preference.

Currently my Dad has a BMW 335xi and it’s a great little car. The 300 HP twin-turbo is one of the best in the business as is the AWD system. Where the BMW really shines is performance. The 3-series, like all BMW’s feels like it’s made out of a block of granite. The doors shut with a solid “THUNK” and it’s road manners are nothing short of stellar. It’s a great sedan, but in my opinion a bit small especially when the optioned out price is nudging $50,000.

As the conversation progressed my Dad let me know that he was thinking about getting rid of the 335xi and he asked what I thought. Keep in mind that this is a guy that has been driving nothing but German cars for the last 25 years so getting him to try something American may be a bit difficult. As we sat at the table, wine in hand of course, we discussed the new car criteria. First off, AWD is a must as we live in the Northeast. Second, it must be a four door with room in the rear and third, it must be performance oriented so that when the time comes for a little back road hoonage, the car can oblige.

Let’s see now. GM has the wonderful Cadillac CTS in AWD. This is a great car with a proven track record and great power plant in the form of an optional 3.6 direct-injection V6 that makes 304 HP. My biggest concern here is size, as I think the interior quarters may be a bit cramped for anyone over six feet tall. Price wise it’s right in the same ball park as the BMW at almost 50k.

Next up would be Chrysler’s 300C AWD. I think that I’m going to put the brakes on this one right now as a new redesigned version is set to come out later this year. We know the current 300C is a great car, but it’s now a bit dated and I only want to Focus on the new stuff.

We now come to the new 2011 Ford Taurus SHO. It’s been completely redesigned, features a new 365hp twin-turbo V6, it’s a large comfortable sedan and it’s tuned to have a sporty ride and feel. Hmm… could we possibly have a contender here? I’m currently working on getting a Taurus SHO press car as I really want to check this thing out in person and put it through it’s paces. It should be interesting to see how well the Taurus SHO stacks up against the BMW and it’s a comparison that I am looking forward to doing and one that I hope everyone will enjoy when complete.

Easter dinner with family is always a fun event.
