This is the same <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ansel_Adams\" >Ansel Adams<\/a> who&#8217;s arguably the greatest nature photographer of all time. <\/p>\n<p>The short story (see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0De1cAyRE9w&amp;feature=player_embedded\" >this video<\/a> for the long one) of Adams&#8217; involvement goes like this: in 1941, the Secretary of Interior under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harold Ickes, met Adams, struck up a friendship, and commissioned him to take some pictures for the Interior headquarters that would illustrate the agency&#8217;s mission. In all, Adams took 200 photographs, but World War II delayed completion of the murals until now. DOI has created <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doi.gov\/news\/photos\/Ansel-Adams-Mural-Project-Opens-at-Interior-Department.cfm\" >26 murals<\/a> that the public can view at their headquarters by appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\nToday art in federal buildings is generally commissioned by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/Portal\/gsa\/ep\/contentView.do?contentType=GSA_OVERVIEW&amp;contentId=8146\" >General Services Administration&#8217;s Art in Architecture Program.<\/a> If you are interested in getting a commission, you can request to be added to GSA&#8217;s registry of artists who are interested in being commissioned for federal building work. <\/p>\n<p>\nIs there any art in government buildings that you like?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.usa.gov\/roller\/govgab\/entry\/create_art_for_federal_buildings\" >Gov Gab: Your U.S. Government Blog &#8230;<\/a><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>04.02.10 10:38 AM It took almost 70 years, but the Department of the Interior (DOI) headquarters recently unveiled murals taken from Ansel Adams&#8217; portraits.
