{"id":516587,"date":"2010-04-05T18:33:45","date_gmt":"2010-04-05T22:33:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/?p=22533"},"modified":"2010-04-05T18:33:45","modified_gmt":"2010-04-05T22:33:45","slug":"the-war-against-carbon-starts-now-part-1-the-carbon-war-room-starts-to-bust-barriers-in-shipping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/516587","title":{"rendered":"The war against carbon starts now &#8211; Part 1:  The Carbon War Room starts to bust barriers in shipping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Carbon-War-Room.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22534\" title=\"Carbon War Room\" src=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Carbon-War-Room.gif\" alt=\"Carbon War Room\" width=\"600\" height=\"555\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Readers are always asking what can been done to cut carbon beyond pushing for the bipartisan climate and clean energy jobs bill.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m launching a new series aimed at the kind of serious action people can push for at a local and state level &#8212; and even at a national and global level &#8212; without waiting for politicians.\u00a0 After all, the biggest, most money-saving strategies to cut carbon are already profitable (see &#8220;<a title=\"Permanent Link to McKinsey must-read:  U.S. can  meet entire 2020 emissions target with efficiency and cogeneration while  lowering the nation\u2019s energy bill $700 billion!\" rel=\"bookmark\" href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/2009\/07\/29\/mckinsey-energy-efficiency-report\/\">McKinsey must-read:   U.S. can meet entire 2020 emissions target with efficiency and  cogeneration while lowering the nation\u2019s energy bill $700 billion!<\/a>&#8220;)<\/p>\n<p>The impetus for this new series is my interview today (below) of Jigar Shah, the uber-innovative clean energy financing guru who founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;ct=res&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CAgQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sunedison.com%2F&amp;ei=Xl-6S9iADIGC8ga3m7H_Dg&amp;usg=AFQjCNEaDvQ93FB8_TnI0dX598SoCkqEaQ&amp;sig2=DYfDD2C8vGHxCD5oR8IgeA\">Sun Edison<\/a> and now heads the new nonprofit, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbonwarroom.com\/\">Carbon War Room<\/a>.\u00a0 The objective of CWR, founded by entrepreneurs like Sir Richard Branson, is to &#8220;ensure a prosperous future for all on the planet by developing a post-carbon  economy.&#8221;\u00a0 The operational approach is to &#8220;bring together successful entrepreneurs in collaboration with the  most respected institutions, scientists, national security experts, and  business leaders to implement the change required to avoid catastrophic  climate change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Carbon War Room has &#8220;identified 25 battles across 7 theaters that are  material to winning the war against climate change. Each battle  accounts for over 1 billion tons (or more than 2%) of global  anthropogenic CO<sub>2<\/sub>e emissions annually.&#8221; \u00a0 The figure above represents CWR&#8217;s &#8220;Theaters and Battles,&#8221; with filled in green circles representing an &#8220;Op in Progress&#8221; and the dotted circles a developing Op.\u00a0 For instance, one area CWR has already start on is shipping, a too-neglected sector that has huge emissions and but only medium-sized market barriers, which they are addressing with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbonwarroom.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2.c.i_-_Shipping_1-pager.pdf\">Operation  Rock The Boat<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-22533\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/CWR-Shipping.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22537\" title=\"CWR Shipping\" src=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/CWR-Shipping.gif\" alt=\"CWR Shipping\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The CWR notes that<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Currently available technologies can substantially reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub>e.
