{"id":517499,"date":"2010-04-06T00:18:02","date_gmt":"2010-04-06T04:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opiniojuris.org\/?p=11816"},"modified":"2010-04-06T00:18:02","modified_gmt":"2010-04-06T04:18:02","slug":"the-u-s-senate-sort-of-backs-morocco-in-the-western-sahara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/517499","title":{"rendered":"The U.S. Senate (Sort of) Backs Morocco in the Western Sahara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>by Julian Ku <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not exactly a hot topic, even among international lawyers, yet the ongoing dispute over the Western Sahara (and Morocco&#8217;s claim to it) has drawn the attention of 54 U.S. Senators, who recently sent a <a  href=\"http:\/\/www.moroccanamericanpolicy.org\/SenateLetter.pdf\">letter<\/a> to U.S. Secretary of State Clinton about it favoring support for Morocco&#8217;s 2007 proposal for autonomy in the disputed region. This <a  href=\"http:\/\/towardfreedom.com\/home\/content\/view\/1913\/1\/\">analysis<\/a> claims the letter&#8217;s approach would trample\u00a0on the people of the Western Sahara&#8217;s right to self-determination. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s that clear cut, but it is interesting to see the U.S. Senators even getting involved in this fight.
