{"id":517747,"date":"2010-04-06T11:02:35","date_gmt":"2010-04-06T15:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/?p=22573"},"modified":"2010-04-06T11:02:35","modified_gmt":"2010-04-06T15:02:35","slug":"exxon-mobil-paid-no-federal-income-tax-in-2009-steve-martin-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/517747","title":{"rendered":"Exxon Mobil paid no federal income tax in 2009 &#8211; Steve Martin lives!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-90308\" title=\"exxon-mobil\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/exxon-mobil.jpg\" alt=\"exxon-mobil\" width=\"200\" height=\"161\" \/>The joke goes, The economy is so bad Exxon Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.\u00a0 If only.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out the economy is never really bad for the oil giant, and the last thing they would want to do is cut off support to members of Congress who allow them to pull off the remarkable trick of making $45 billion in profits last year but paying no federal income tax.\u00a0 Think Progress <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/04\/06\/exxon-tax\/\">reports<\/a> the stunning news, which, sadly, is not a Steve Martin routine:<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-22573\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Last week, Forbes magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2010\/04\/01\/ge-exxon-walmart-business-washington-corporate-taxes_2.html\">published<\/a> what the top U.S. corporations paid in taxes last year. \u201cMost  egregious,\u201d Forbes notes, is General Electric, which \u201cgenerated $10.3  billion in pretax income, but ended up owing nothing to Uncle Sam. In  fact, it recorded a tax benefit of $1.1 billion.\u201d Big Oil giant Exxon  Mobil, which last year reported a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2009\/01\/30\/exxon-mobil-reports-recor_n_162468.html\">record  $45.2 billion profit<\/a>, paid the most taxes of any corporation, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/2010\/04\/01\/ge-exxon-walmart-business-washington-corporate-taxes_2.html\">none  of it went to the IRS<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Exxon tries to limit the tax pain with the help of 20  wholly owned subsidiaries domiciled in the Bahamas, Bermuda and the  Cayman Islands that (legally) shelter the cash flow from operations in  the likes of Angola, Azerbaijan and Abu Dhabi. <strong>No wonder that of  $15 billion in income taxes last year, Exxon paid none of it to Uncle  Sam, and has tens of billions in earnings permanently reinvested  overseas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mother Jones\u2019 Adam Weinstein <a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/mojo\/2010\/04\/exxon-mobil-paid-zero-income-tax-offshore%20shelter-wal-mart-general-electric-forbes?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Motherjones%2Fmojoblog+%28MotherJones.com+%7C+MoJoBlog%29\">notes<\/a> that, despite benefiting from corporate welfare in the U.S., Exxon  complains about paying high taxes, claiming that it threatens energy  innovation research. Pat Garofalo at the Wonk Room <a href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2009\/04\/22\/corporate-tax-offshore\/\">notes<\/a> that big corporations\u2019 tax shelter practices similar to Exxon\u2019s shift a  $100 billion annual tax burden onto U.S. taxpayers. In fact, in 2008,  the Government Accountability Office found that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/13\/business\/13tax.html?_r=1\">two  out of every three<\/a> United States corporations paid no federal income  taxes from 1998 through 2005.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Media Matters <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamattersaction.org\/blog\/201004060001\">adds<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Even though Exxon doesn&#8217;t contribute anything to the federal government,  it  spends millions of dollars trying to control it.\u00a0 According to the  Center for  Responsive Politics, Exxon Mobil spent a whopping <a title=\"http:\/\/mediamattersaction.org\/rd?to=http:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/lobby\/clientsum.php?lname=Exxon+Mobil&amp;year=2009\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamattersaction.org\/rd?to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.opensecrets.org%2Flobby%2Fclientsum.php%3Flname%3DExxon%2BMobil%26year%3D2009\">$27,430,000<\/a> on lobbying in 2009 alone.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, and you&#8217;ll be delighted to know that, as the <em>Financial Times<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/45b62a24-410c-11df-94c2-00144feabdc0.html\">reports<\/a> today &#8220;ExxonMobil, the world\u2019s largest international oil company, has agreed to pay the US government $32.2m in a settlement to resolve claims that it knowingly underpaid royalties owed on natural gas produced from federal and native American leases, the justice department said on Monday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Someday, ExxonMobilShellChevronConocoPhilips will be one big company  making tens of billions of dollars in profit, while paying no federal  income taxes and spending millions spreading disinformation aimed at  keeping us addicted to their toxic product.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/snltranscripts.jt.org\/77\/pics\/77imono4.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"120\" \/>And if this reminds you of an old Steve Martin joke &#8212; then you are right.\u00a0 From <a href=\"http:\/\/snltranscripts.jt.org\/77\/77imono.phtml\">SNL<\/a> in 1978:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>You<\/strong>.. can be a millionaire.. and <strong>never<\/strong> pay taxes!  <strong>You<\/strong> can be a millionaire.. and <strong>never<\/strong> pay taxes!<\/p>\n<p>You say.. &#8220;Steve..  how can <em>I<\/em> be a millionaire.. and <strong>never<\/strong> pay taxes?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First.. get a million dollars.  Now.. you say, &#8220;Steve.. what do I say to  the tax man when he comes to my door and says, &#8216;<strong>You<\/strong>.. have <strong>never<\/strong> paid taxes&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two<\/strong> simple words.  Two simple words in the  English language: &#8220;I forgot!&#8221;  How many times do we let ourselves get  into terrible situations because we <strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> say &#8220;I forgot&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s  say you&#8217;re on trial for armed robbery.  You say to the judge, &#8220;I forgot  armed robbery was illegal.&#8221;  Let&#8217;s suppose he says back to you, &#8220;You  have committed a foul crime.  you have stolen hundreds and thousands of  dollars from people at random, and you say, &#8216;I <em>forgot&#8217;<\/em>?&#8221;  <strong>Two<\/strong> simple words: Ex<em>cuuuuuse<\/em> <strong>me!!<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, it&#8217;s ain&#8217;t armed.\u00a0 But it is robbery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The joke goes, The economy is so bad Exxon Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.\u00a0 If only.
