{"id":518857,"date":"2010-04-07T06:43:27","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T10:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/faithworld\/?p=12785"},"modified":"2010-04-07T06:43:27","modified_gmt":"2010-04-07T10:43:27","slug":"malaysia-plans-interfaith-committee-as-tension-rises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/518857","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia plans interfaith committee as tension rises"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_12786\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 360px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12786\" title=\"malaysia cross\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/faithworld\/files\/2010\/04\/malaysia-cross-350x424-custom.jpg\" alt=\"malaysia cross\" width=\"350\" height=\"424\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Burn marks on the wall of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Petaling Jaya outside Kuala Lumpur January 9, 2010, one of several struck in a row over the use of the word &quot;Allah&quot;\/Bazuki Muhammad <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Malaysia will set up an interfaith  committee to promote religious harmony, a cabinet minister said on  Tuesday, after a series of religious disputes have fueled tensions in  the mainly Muslim country.<\/p>\n<p>The interfaith committee will look into  religious groups&#8217; disputes with one another and promote understanding  among them, Koh Tsu Koon, Minister in the Prime Minister&#8217;s Department,  was quoted by the online version of the Star newspaper as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The  development came a week after the government dropped a caning sentence  imposed on a woman for drinking beer, a case that raised concerns of  intolerance in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno,  was sentenced to six strokes of the cane and a fine after she was  caught drinking beer by Islamic enforcement officials two years ago at a  hotel lounge in the central state of Pahang.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia practises a  dual-track legal system, with Islamic criminal and family law  applicable to Muslims.
