{"id":519287,"date":"2010-04-07T11:15:35","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T15:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef01347fb5bf18970c"},"modified":"2010-04-07T11:15:35","modified_gmt":"2010-04-07T15:15:35","slug":"o-c-fire-official-racks-up-26000-in-toll-road-fines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/519287","title":{"rendered":"O.C. fire official racks up $26,000 in toll road fines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/bottleneck\/images\/2008\/08\/29\/toll.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/bottleneck\/images\/2008\/08\/29\/toll.jpg\" style=\"margin: 4px; float: left;\" title=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/bottleneck\/images\/2008\/08\/29\/toll.jpg\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not uncommon for motorists who use Orange County&#8217;s toll lanes without a Fastrak transponder to get a bill in the mail from the toll road agency.<\/p>\n<p>But $26,000?<\/p>\n<p>According to the agency, a top official for the Newport Beach Fire Department, Paul Matheis, racked up more than $26,000 in<br \/>\nfines and penalties over a two-year period by using toll roads.<\/p>\n<p>The agency sent a<br \/>\nletter to Matheis and the city\u00a0 notifying them about the fines, said the toll road agency&#8217;s spokeswoman, Lisa Telles.<\/p>\n<p> Toll road violators are identified by cameras that take a<br \/>\npicture of the vehicle\u2019s license plates, she said.<br \/><\/br><br \/>\n<br \/><\/br><br \/>\nMatheis paid<br \/>\nthe fines personally and the issue is resolved from the agency\u2019s side,<br \/>\nsaid Newport Beach city spokeswoman Tara Finnigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>However, the city is now<br \/>\ninvestigating whether Matheis was using the Chevy Tahoe in compliance<br \/>\nwith city policy, Finnigan told the Daily Pilot.<\/p>\n<p>Matheis, the Fire<br \/>\nDepartment\u2019s Training Division chief, had been using the toll roads to<br \/>\ncommute in his city-issued vehicle, said Telles.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailypilot.com\/articles\/2010\/04\/07\/publicsafety\/dpt-matheis040710.txt\">Read the full story here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Joseph Serna<\/p>\n<p><em>Photo: Orange County toll road.
