{"id":519402,"date":"2010-04-07T13:43:22","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T17:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-07-this-week-in-comically-evil-corporate-behavior\/"},"modified":"2010-04-07T13:43:22","modified_gmt":"2010-04-07T17:43:22","slug":"this-week-in-comically-evil-corporate-behavior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/519402","title":{"rendered":"This week in comically evil corporate behavior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tby Jonathan Hiskes <\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s only Wednesday and we&#8217;ve already got way more than a week&#8217;s worth of comically evil behavior from the fossil-fuel sector.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Item the first<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A Chinese coal freighter tried to take a shortcut through Australia&#8217;s Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-05-one-more-blow-to-the-ailing-great-barrier-reef\/\">rammed into<\/a> the world-reknowned ecological treasure. The stranded ship <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/08\/world\/asia\/08reef.html\">remains in danger<\/a> of breaking apart and spilling its 1,075 tons of heavy engine fuel into the marine park (2.5 tons have already leaked).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Captain Wang Jichan, of the Chinese state-controlled conglomerate Cosco, doesn&rsquo;t get it. He <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/captain-unfazed-by-spill\/story-e6frf7jo-1225850669268\">told authorities<\/a> the leak is &ldquo;not serious&rdquo; and that he&rsquo;s more worried about pesky rescuers consuming his crew&rsquo;s food and water: &#8220;They need some more water because the rescue team is consuming the water and food. They need that. That is a problem at the moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Item the second<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>In response to the tragic coal-mine explosion that killed at least 25 of his workers, notorious coal baron Don Blankenship shrugged off his company&rsquo;s history of safety. &ldquo;Violations are unfortunately a normal part of the mining process,&rdquo; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/07\/us\/07company.html?ref=us\">said<\/a> the Massey Energy CEO.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This from a businessman who wrote a 2005 memo instructing supervisors not to waste time on safety precautions and whose company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/08\/us\/08westvirginia.html?hp=&amp;pagewanted=all\">was called<\/a> &ldquo;one of the worst in the industry&rdquo; by a government safety regulator.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>Item the third<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>ExxonMobil <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/04\/06\/exxon-tax\/\">paid no U.S. income taxes last year<\/a>, despite reaping a record $45 billion profit. By using legal accounting methods and Caribbean tax shelters, the energy giant was able to avoid paying a cent to the IRS. At the same time, it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exxonmobil.com\/corporate\/energy_issues_taxes.aspx\">complains<\/a> about its tax &ldquo;burden.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Remember, these are the captains of industry who tell us we can&rsquo;t afford to change our current way of doing things. This is the status quo they&rsquo;re working frantically to defend.
