This vigil comes after reports of mismanagement of ICE &#8212; which SEIU Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seiu.org\/mt\/mt-search.cgi?blog_id=1&amp;tag=U.S.%20Immigration%20Customs%20and%20Enforcement%20Agency&amp;limit=20\" >&#8220;completely out of control&#8221;<\/a> &#8212; published by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/01\/us\/01detain.html\" >The New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/26\/AR2010032604891.html\" >The Washington Post<\/a> and the Department of Homeland Security&#8217;s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/xoig\/assets\/mgmtrpts\/OIG_10-63_Mar10.pdf\" >Office of Inspector General<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From SEIU&#8217;s press release today:<span id=\"more-81595\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Rather than wasting limited funds  to chase hard-working, tax-paying cleaners, home-care providers and  nannies, the activists will call on President Obama and Secretary Janet  Napolitano to re-focus ICE enforcement on its original goals of  targeting crooked employers and criminals.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday and Friday\u2019s vigils are an effort to  illustrate the ongoing, human cost of this agency\u2019s misguided,  out-of-control immigration enforcement strategy\u2014which only serves to  waste taxpayer resources, hurt hardworking people, and devastate local  communities.\u00a0 ICE\u2019s \u201cstrategy\u201d of sowing misery in workplaces and  communities not only fails to tackle the underlying issue of our broken  immigration system\u2014it also contradicts efforts to improve wages and  working conditions of all U.S. workers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While other civil rights groups have been vocal about their disapproval of ICE, this looks like the first national attempt to call attention to the agency&#8217;s abuses after these recent reports. It&#8217;s unlikely this will inspire a response of action from DHS, since these abuses have been documented many times before, but it could mean other groups might start joining the effort.
