{"id":520364,"date":"2010-04-08T10:09:57","date_gmt":"2010-04-08T14:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/?p=81643"},"modified":"2010-04-08T10:09:57","modified_gmt":"2010-04-08T14:09:57","slug":"initial-unemployment-claims-rise-unexpectedly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/520364","title":{"rendered":"Initial Unemployment Claims Rise Unexpectedly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, the Labor Department <a title=\"announced\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dol.gov\/opa\/media\/press\/eta\/ui\/eta20100433.htm\">announced<\/a> that 460,000 Americans applied for  unemployment benefits for the first time &#8212; up from the week before and  something of a surprise to economists, who had <a title=\"estimated\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/04\/08\/news\/economy\/initial_jobless_claims\/index.htm?section=money_topstories&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+rss%2Fmoney_topstories+%28Top+Stories%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\">estimated<\/a> claims to be around 435,000. These  initial applications came mostly from people whose employer-provided  benefits have expired, which normally happens after 26 weeks. So what  was going on six months ago? The economy was still shedding nearly  10,000 jobs a day, with the unemployment rate nearing 10 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The  figure throws some cold water on the otherwise improving macroeconomic  figures. The country added 162,000 jobs in March, the most since 2007 &#8212;  but that &#8220;jobless recovery&#8221;?
