{"id":520500,"date":"2010-04-08T12:49:39","date_gmt":"2010-04-08T16:49:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/illinoiseducationassociation.org\/?p=7046"},"modified":"2010-04-08T12:49:39","modified_gmt":"2010-04-08T16:49:39","slug":"students%e2%80%99-safety-at-risk-please-contact-legislators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/520500","title":{"rendered":"Students\u2019 safety at risk, please contact legislators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7047\" title=\"school nurse\" src=\"http:\/\/illinoiseducationassociation.org\/media\/school-nurse-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>School nurses are asking for help fighting a bill they fear could reduce safety for all school children, especially those with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>They are urging their fellow IEA members to <a href=\"http:\/\/capwiz.com\/nea\/il\/state\/main\/?state=IL&amp;view=myofficials&amp;action=chgaddr#0\">contact their legislators<\/a> to fight against HB 6065\/SB 3822.<\/p>\n<p>House Bill 6065, which passed the Illinois House in March, and its companion Senate Bill 3822, would allow unlicensed individuals with <strong>no educational requirements<\/strong> to serve as \u201cdelegated care aides\u201d to diabetic children.<\/p>\n<p>These individuals would be responsible for delivering care to the diabetic child without liability including administering insulin, checking a student\u2019s blood sugar and responding to emergency situations within the school.<\/p>\n<p>If necessary, the \u201caide\u201d would be authorized to contact healthcare providers to modify the diabetic plan of care for the child. Your lawmakers\u2019 names will appear. Click on your lawmakers and you can see information about them, including how to contact them.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Nurses are the qualified healthcare professional taught to care for children with complex chronic illnesses in a school setting. Only nurses have the requisite education in assessment, planning and intervention to assess a child, administer insulin, communicate with providers, and respond in emergency situations for all children within the school.<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition for Safe Health Care Management of School Children, which includes IEA members, urges everyone who is concerned about the safety of students in our schools to contact your state senator today and request they vote \u201cno\u201d to HB 6065\/ SB 3822.<\/p>\n<p>To further the safety of school children, urge your legislators to support school nurses in all youth educational settings across Illinois.
