{"id":521126,"date":"2010-04-08T21:04:11","date_gmt":"2010-04-09T01:04:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/?p=111800"},"modified":"2010-04-08T21:04:11","modified_gmt":"2010-04-09T01:04:11","slug":"finally-broadband-over-powerline-r-i-p","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/521126","title":{"rendered":"Finally, Broadband Over Powerline, R.I.P."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the early part of this decade, lobbyists, former FCC chairmen Michael Powell and Kevin Martin and a sundry bunch of random <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carpetbagger\">carpet baggers<\/a> were all very vocal and\u00a0enthusiastic\u00a0in pushing a technology called broadband over power-line. <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2005\/05\/18\/bpl-a-technology-whose-time-has-come-and-gone\/\">Never mind the fact that<\/a> BPL didn&#8217;t quite work and very quickly was overtaken by other more sane and feasible technologies. Today, it seems BPL has finally been put to rest.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the City of Manassas, Virginia which spent $1.6 million building a BPL network \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dslreports.com\/shownews\/Most-Successful-US-Broadband-Over-Powerline-Network-Shut-Down-107812\">decided to pull the plug on the network<\/a>. About 500 residental and 46 business\u00a0customers\u00a0accessed the network that was costing $100,000 a month to maintain. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arrl.org\/news\/stories\/2010\/04\/08\/11427\/?nc=1\">They paid $24.95 a month. <\/a>At one point, it was viewed as the most successful BPL network.
