{"id":522039,"date":"2010-04-09T14:43:47","date_gmt":"2010-04-09T18:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/opiniojuris.org\/?p=11920"},"modified":"2010-04-09T14:43:47","modified_gmt":"2010-04-09T18:43:47","slug":"why-the-president%e2%80%99s-targeted-killings-are-illegal-according-to-professor-o%e2%80%99connell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/522039","title":{"rendered":"Why the President\u2019s Targeted Killings are Illegal (According to Professor O\u2019Connell)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>by Julian Ku <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kevin has done, and is <a  href=\"http:\/\/opiniojuris.org\/2010\/04\/08\/lets-call-killing-al-awlaki-what-it-is-murder\/\">doing<\/a>, a very nice job of critiquing the legality of the Obama Administration&#8217;s targeted killing policy. \u00a0On the critical side, it is also worth noting<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2010\/04\/08\/opinion\/main6377556.shtml\"> the views of Mary Ellen O&#8217;Connell<\/a>, Professor at Notre Dame, who has become a leading public critic of the legality of this policy. \u00a0Her basic point is that international law only permits such killings on the battlefield, and any killings off of the battlefield (as she defines it) are illegal acts of extrajudicial murder.
