{"id":522862,"date":"2010-04-10T09:03:11","date_gmt":"2010-04-10T13:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=2241"},"modified":"2010-04-10T09:03:11","modified_gmt":"2010-04-10T13:03:11","slug":"the-worst-science-journalism-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/522862","title":{"rendered":"The worst science journalism ever?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here at Language Log, we&#8217;ve been known to <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=334\">complain<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/003507.html\">time<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/000398.html\">time<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/002493.html\">about<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=1358\">language-related<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=1448\">reporting<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=579\">in the<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/001382.html\">popular<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/002024.html\">press<\/a>.\u00a0 But a couple of days ago, when I clicked on a link in the science section of Google News and hit John Brandon&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/scitech\/2010\/04\/05\/freaky-physics-proves-parallel-universes\/\">Freaky Physics Proves Parallel Universes Exist<\/a>&#8220;, Fox News, 4\/5\/2010, I was reminded that things could be worse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Look past the details of a wonky discovery by a group of California scientists &#8212; that a quantum state is now observable with the human eye &#8212; and consider its implications: Time travel may be feasible. Doc Brown would be proud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The strange discovery by quantum physicists at the University of California Santa Barbara means that an object you can see in front of you may exist simultaneously in a parallel universe &#8212; a multi-state condition that has scientists theorizing that traveling through time may be much more than just the plaything of science fiction writers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-2241\"><\/span>A bit of web search turned up Matt Springer&#8217;s blog post &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/builtonfacts\/2010\/04\/the_worst_physics_article_ever.php\">The Worst Physics Article Ever<\/a>&#8220;, which confirmed my reaction:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Every word in the title is wrong but &#8220;physics&#8221;. It&#8217;s not freaky, doesn&#8217;t prove anything we didn&#8217;t already know, and has nothing to do with parallel universes nor does it shed any light [on] the question of their possible existence. [&#8230;]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I know complaining about science journalism is a staple around ScienceBlogs, but really this is just astonishing malpractice. This would be an embarrassment in a Star Trek episode.
