Meanwhile, <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/embargowatch.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/08\/now-it-can-be-told-my-take-on-the-science-hominid-missing-link-study-embargo\/\">Ivan Oransky<\/a> covers the embargo farrago that surrounded this story, and I suggest to the world\u2019s journalists that the only acceptable use of the phrase \u201cmissing link\u201d is <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/dja018s\">this<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Grisly video of a <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/ykgcc7\">hyena eating a giraffe<\/a> while sitting in it. Amazing, life-affirming stuff.<\/li>\n<li>Colin Schultz discusses whether science journalism is caught in a <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cwEdo4\">reinforcing cycle of niche reporting<\/a>, with views from me, Carl Zimmer, Ferris Jabr and more, and a great comment discussion developing<\/li>\n<li>Crittercam reveals a great fight between a <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/dbaAjp\">sealion and a giant octopus<\/a>. I say \u201cgreat\u201d. I really mean \u201cquick\u201d. I choose to believe them.<\/li>\n<li>Christine Ottery discusses the future of <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/cNhSps\">investigative science journalism<\/a> following interviews with me and other participants at City University\u2019s Science and the Media debate.<\/li>\n<li>PLoS ONE has an interesting paper about how positive results increase <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.plosone.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0010068\">down the hierarchy of the sciences<\/a>, from physical sciences to social ones.<\/li>\n<li>The scientific community is abuzz with news that everyone\u2019s favourite <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2010\/100407\/full\/464825a.html\">black-bellied dew-lover<\/a> <em>Drosophila melanogaster<\/em> might have to be renamed. Nature News has the story. Brendan Maher has already set up a #savedrosophila hashtag on Twitter.<\/li>\n<li>In the Atlantic, Lane Wallace has an excellent piece about the <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/culture\/archive\/2010\/04\/the-bias-of-veteran-journalists\/38426\/\">bias of veteran journalists<\/a> \u2013 essential reading for anyone who thinks that journalists are the only people capable of impartial, independent reporting.<\/li>\n<li>A PNAS paper about <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/sciencenow\/2010\/04\/slideshow-a-cretaceous-menagerie.html\">beautiful insects preserved in Cretaceous amber<\/a> prompted a fascinating blog fight between <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/myrmecos.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/05\/taxonomy-fail-2\/\">Alex Wild of Myrmecos<\/a> and the paper\u2019s authors. Alex has since conceded but the entire issue makes for fascinating reading.<\/li>\n<li>Ever since Titanoboa, the world\u2019s largest ever snake, was discovered, every fossil in the surrounding area became destined to be described in relation to this mega-serpent. As an example, see Wired\u2019s piece about a <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wiredscience\/2010\/04\/thick-shelled-fossil-turtle\/\">fossil turtle that had an extra-thick shell<\/a> to fend off Titanoboa.<\/li>\n<li>National Geographic has a piece about a rare breed of <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/b60W42\">super-taskers<\/a> who can juggle driving and using mobile phones without an increased risk of accidents. But can they juggle phones while driving?<\/li>\n<li>The New York Times had an interesting piece about <a rel=\"nofollow\">gay behaviour in animals<\/a>. Jonah Lehrer <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/cortex\/2010\/04\/gay_animals.php\">gave his take on it<\/a>, and Vanessa Woods followed it up with a <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/your-inner-bonobo\/201004\/can-animals-be-gay-are-you-serious-nyt\">post in Psychology Today<\/a> claiming that a story about gay sex in animals without bonobos is like an article about big ears without elephants.<\/li>\n<li>Mind Hacks has a post about how <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.mindhacks.com\/blog\/2010\/04\/at_the_yawn_of_time.html\">rates of yawning<\/a> change throughout our lives, which will almost certainly make you yawn.<\/li>\n<li>Will the iPad change journalism or publishing? Who cares? The big question is <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lAl28d6tbko\">will it blend<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>In the NYT, Natalie Angier says that even among animals, there are <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/06\/science\/06angi.html\">leaders, followers and schmoozers<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Phil Plait shares one of the most incredible astronomy photos of all time \u2013 the <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/twitpic.com\/1dfw9y\">International Space Station flying through the aurora<\/a><\/li>\n<li>New Scientist covers research that suggests <em><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg20627545.500-night-skies-suited-dinobirds-eyes.html\">Archaeopteryx may have been nocturnal<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li>And finally, I <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/edyong.posterous.com\/dr-manjir-samanta-laughton-exciting-female-sc\">started a Posterous account<\/a> to mock a piece of hilariously bad PR which suggested that atoms are conscious and that I am Jennifer Ouellette.
