{"id":523179,"date":"2010-04-10T21:34:17","date_gmt":"2010-04-11T01:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c630a53ef0133ec9991bc970b"},"modified":"2010-04-10T21:34:17","modified_gmt":"2010-04-11T01:34:17","slug":"l-a-an-epithet-in-race-for-orange-county-sheriff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/523179","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;L.A.&#8217; an epithet in race for Orange County sheriff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef01157141ac01970b-320wi\" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef01157141ac01970b-320wi\" style=\"margin: 8px; float: left;\" title=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef01157141ac01970b-320wi\"><\/img><\/p>\n<p>After Orange County&#8217;s sheriff was indicted on corruption charges on<br \/>\n2007, supervisors made a point of looking beyond the county limits to<br \/>\nfind a replacement who was free of the cronyism and scandal that had<br \/>\ntainted the office. <\/p>\n<p><\/br>A retired Los Angeles Sheriff&#8217;s Department<br \/>\ndivision chief, Sandra Hutchens was lauded by one county supervisor for<br \/>\nbeing &quot;removed from the political machinations in the county&quot; and was<br \/>\nseen as a welcome breath of fresh air in a department that had been led<br \/>\nfor decades by politically connected lawmen. <br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>But now, facing<br \/>\nher first election bid, Hutchens is fighting criticism that she&#8217;s too<br \/>\nmuch of an outsider, a career cop from Los Angeles who just doesn&#8217;t<br \/>\nunderstand Orange County.<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>As sheriff, Hutchens shook up her<br \/>\ncommand staff, threatened to rescind concealed weapons permits handed<br \/>\nout by former Sheriff Michael S. Carona and struck an independent tone<br \/>\nthat rubbed some county supervisors the wrong way, at times leaving<br \/>\nthem out of the loop or having to ask questions after decisions had<br \/>\nbeen made. <br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br><\/p>\n<p>Critics called it her L.A. style, a derisive term<br \/>\nin Orange County&#8217;s political sphere, where Los Angeles is seen as being<br \/>\ntoo liberal, a place where headstrong and overly autonomous leaders<br \/>\nreign. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/br>Hutchens&#8217; opponents in the June election have made  political ammunition out of her L.A. roots, hoping to end her tenure.<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br><\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\nderiding Hutchens&#8217; proposal to house federal immigration detainees in<br \/>\ntwo county jails, one of her opponents, Anaheim Deputy Chief Craig<br \/>\nHunter, wrote, &quot;That is how they balance budgets and fight crime in Los<br \/>\nAngeles County, from where our current sheriff arrived.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-hutchens11-2010apr11,0,4267880.story\">Read the full story here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Raja Abdulrahim in Santa Ana<\/p>\n<p>Photo: L.A.
