It sheds light on many of the reasons for the decline of GM and the American labor movement. More generally, it&#8217;s a story of a successful innovation that failed to spread, due to policy resistance, inability to confront worse-before-better behavior and other dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed elements of a lot of system dynamics work in manufacturing. Here&#8217;s a brief reading list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Workers fear <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/nelsonr\/www\/Fear.html\">improving themselves out of a job<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/jsterman\/www\/ADI\/ADIhome.html\">TQM improvements can undercut themselves<\/a> when they interact with existing organizational systems<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/nelsonr\/www\/CMR_PDv4.doc.html\">Firefighting<\/a> is a trap that keeps lines running in a low-productivity state<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemdynamics.org\/conferences\/2005\/proceed\/papers\/LU101.pdf\">Engineering and production don&#8217;t get along<\/a> (I think there&#8217;s more on this in <a href=\"http:\/\/dspace.mit.edu\/handle\/1721.1\/12657\">Daniel Kim&#8217;s thesis<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Systems have trouble making far-sighted decisions when confronted with worse-before-better behavior (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemdynamics.org\/conferences\/2007\/proceed\/papers\/RAHMA118.pdf\">but there might be good reasons<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This American Life had a great show on the NUMMI car plant, a remarkable joint venture between Toyota and GM.
