During the conference, a rift among the speakers opened up after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich urged the GOP to move away from their obstructionist label as the &#8220;Party of No.&#8221;  The American Solutions chairman called for Republicans to embrace [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>GOP leaders <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-na-gop11-2010apr11,0,689932.story\">converged on New Orleans<\/a> this weekend for the Southern Republican Leadership Conference. During the conference, <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-na-gop11-2010apr11,0,689932.story\">a rift among the speakers<\/a> opened up after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich urged the GOP to move away from their obstructionist label as the &#8220;Party of No.&#8221;  The <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2008\/09\/12\/aswf-pollution-day\/\">American Solutions chairman<\/a> called for Republicans to embrace a new monicker &#8212; &#8220;the Party of Yes&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>What the left wants to do is say we&#8217;re the party of no [\u2026] So here&#8217;s what I want to ask you to encourage every candidate that you know, every incumbent you know, every staff person you know, every consultant you know. <strong>I think we should decide we&#8217;re going to be the Party of Yes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Gingrich can expect an uphill battle as he attempts to re-frame the GOP as anything other than <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/pr.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/pr20100303\">the party of obstructionism<\/a>, given that the right wing seems most excited about the <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-503544_162-20001666-503544.html\">prospect<\/a> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stop-obama.org\/\">of<\/a> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Stop-Obama\/\">stopping<\/a> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/teaparty.freedomworks.org\/events\/stop-obamacare-rally-il\">anything<\/a> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefoxnation.com\/business\/2010\/01\/12\/chamber-commerce-vows-stop-obama-agenda\">Obama wants to do<\/a>. After Gingrich delivered the call, it didn&#8217;t take long for <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2009\/07\/30\/jindal-refuses-stimuluscredit\/\">Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal<\/a> and <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/yglesias.thinkprogress.org\/archives\/2010\/03\/palin-we-used-to-hustle-over-the-border-for-health-care-we-received-in-canada.php\">former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin<\/a> to double down on their party&#8217;s obstructionism, touting the nickname &#8220;The Party of Hell No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Think Progress compiled a video illustrating the Republican confusion. Watch it:<br \/> <center><object width=\"320\" height=\"260\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/B7XGdrDbH2Q&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/B7XGdrDbH2Q&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"320\" height=\"260\"><\/embed><\/object><\/center><\/p>\n<p>With Republicans saying <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/17\/boehner-punk\/\">no to Wall Street reform<\/a>, no to an <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/04\/07\/coburn-block-small\/\">extension of unemployment benefits<\/a>, and preemptively saying <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/04\/11\/supreme-court-republicans_n_533335.html\">no to the next Supreme Court appointee<\/a>, it seems the GOP could resolve its internal conundrum by sticking to calling themselves &#8220;The Party of Hell No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/04\/12\/cuccinelli-hold-breath\/\" >Cuccinelli mocks dangers of CO2, telling Tea Partiers to hold their breath and make the EPA happy. \t\t<\/a><br \/> On Saturday, Virginia Attorney General attended the Powhatan Taxpayers\u2019 Alliance Tea Party rally to address his beloved base. Cuccinelli reportedly greeted the crowd by saying that it was &#8220;great to be with so many people who appreciate the Constitution&#8221; and then talked about his challenge to the Environmental Protection Agency&#8217;s conclusion that greenhouse gases [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/PH2010030600060.jpg\" alt=\"Ken Cuccinelli\" title=\"Ken Cuccinelli\" width=\"238\" height=\"179\" class=\"imgright\"\/> On Saturday, Virginia Attorney General attended the Powhatan Taxpayers\u2019 Alliance Tea Party rally to address his <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/23\/AR2010032304224.html\">beloved base<\/a>. Cuccinelli reportedly greeted the crowd by saying that it was &#8220;great to be with so many <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/x-16143-Richmond-Republican-Examiner~y2010m4d12-Cuccinelli-appears-at-Powhatan-Courthouse\">people who appreciate the Constitution<\/a>&#8221; and then talked about his <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whsv.com\/home\/headlines\/89749127.html\">challenge<\/a> to the <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/02\/18\/virginia-climatologist-conspiracy\/\">Environmental Protection Agency&#8217;s conclusion<\/a> that greenhouse gases should be regulated under the Clean Air Act. In particular, the crowd loved when he made fun of the EPA and joked that they could hold their breath for a few seconds and <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/x-16143-Richmond-Republican-Examiner~y2010m4d12-Cuccinelli-appears-at-Powhatan-Courthouse\">make the EPA &#8220;happy&#8221;<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe Attorney General\u2019s office is a very reactive office. We wouldn\u2019t be suing the EPA if the EPA did not abandon all semblance of science and law to put out its endangerment finding on the CO2. <strong>Now, let\u2019s make them all happy just for a moment and everybody just hold your breath,\u201d Cuccinelli waited several seconds before saying \u201cThere you go, just a short period of time with no CO2. Now the trees are going protest but at least the EPA will be happy\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cuccinelli is a full-on global warming denier, saying that climate change is &#8220;<a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/02\/18\/virginia-climatologist-conspiracy\/\">unverifiable and doctored<\/a>&#8221; science. However, environmental and energy groups in Virginia are <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkroom.thinkprogress.org\/2010\/02\/18\/virginia-climatologist-conspiracy\/\">increasingly<\/a> <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/03\/27\/virginians-cuccinelli\/\">pushing back<\/a> on Cuccinelli&#8217;s attempts to dismantle regulations. <\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VIDEO: Republicans Facing An Identity Crisis ? ?Party Of Yes?
