Cottle<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-officer-killed26-2010mar26,0,6401939.story\">killed March 24 in Afghanistan<\/a> while on<br \/>\nMarine Reserve duty, was moving through the streets of downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"float: right;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"COTTLE-27922-Face\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c630a53ef01347fd8c3f3970c \" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef01347fd8c3f3970c-800wi\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px;\" title=\"COTTLE-27922-Face\"><\/img><\/a> <\/span>\u00a0Thousands were expected to pay tribute to Cottle at a service at the <\/span><\/strong>Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cottle&#8217;s casket, covered in an American flag, was being carried in a wagon by horseback from Los Angeles Police Department headquarters to the cathedral, with a group of law enforcement officers walking alongside and to the back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Onlookers lined some street corners, watching as the procession passed by.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Cottle, 45, was traveling with three other Marines<br \/>\nin the Marja region of southern Afghanistan, which has been the focus of an<br \/>\nintense U.S.-led offensive against Taliban forces in recent weeks.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cottle,<br \/>\nwho joined the LAPD in 1990 and won a coveted SWAT position six years<br \/>\nlater, is the first active LAPD officer to be killed in Iraq or<br \/>\nAfghanistan, police officials said.<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br>A veteran of two tours of<br \/>\nduty in Iraq, Cottle deployed to Afghanistan in August 2009<br \/>\nand was scheduled to return home this summer.\u00a0Officers recalled a<br \/>\nfriend who stood out even in the rarefied air of SWAT for the intensity<br \/>\nhe brought to the LAPD&#8217;s most demanding assignment and the care he<br \/>\nshowed for other officers who had turned him into one of the unit&#8217;s<br \/>\nleaders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p>Their armored vehicle struck an improvised explosive device, killing<br \/>\nCottle and another Marine and seriously wounding the two others, said LAPD Capt. John Incontro, who oversees SWAT operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are details about the memorial:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>TRAFFIC<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\nThe funeral procession will start at the new LAPD headquarters and end<br \/>\nat the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.<br \/>\nPortions of 1st Street, Broadway, Spring Street, Temple Street, Hill<br \/>\nStreet, and Grand Avenue will be closed as early as 6 a.m., according<br \/>\nto the LAPD.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>TRANSPORTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Metro bus service in downtown Los Angeles will be affected.<br \/>\nA funeral procession will begin at 8:45 a.m. at the Police<br \/>\nAdministration Building, located at 100 W. 1st St., and will proceed to<br \/>\nthe Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels at 555 W. Temple St. Numerous<br \/>\nMetro bus lines in the Civic Center area will be detoured from 6 a.m.<br \/>\nto 2 p.m., at which time bus service will return to its regular<br \/>\nschedules. Metro bus lines affected by the detours will include:<br \/>\n2, 4, 10, 14, 30, 31, 37, 40, 42, 42A, 45, 48, 55, 60, 68, 70, 71, 76,<br \/>\n78, 79, 81, 83, 84, 90, 91, 92, 94, 96, 302, 333, 355, 439, 445, 485,<br \/>\n487, 489, 714, 730, 740, 745, 770, 794 and Silver Line, according to<br \/>\nthe L.A.
