{"id":527505,"date":"2010-04-14T13:59:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-14T17:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/?p=43305"},"modified":"2010-04-14T13:59:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-14T17:59:00","slug":"%e2%80%98power-lunch%e2%80%99-comes-to-hbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/527505","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Power Lunch\u2019 comes to HBS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When CNBC\u2019s show<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/15838342\/\"> \u201cPower Lunch\u201d <\/a>wanted to gather predictions about <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/\">Twitter<\/a>\u2019s future business model, the program\u2019s hosts decided to ask a group of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/\">Harvard Business School<\/a> (HBS) students who follow the economic side of social media.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare for an on-air chat, several M.B.A. students from associate professor <a href=\"http:\/\/drfd.hbs.edu\/fit\/public\/facultyInfo.do?facInfo=ovr&amp;facId=10663\">Mikolaj Jan Piskorski<\/a>\u2019s second-year elective \u201cCompeting with Social Networks,\u201d which examines the ins and outs of online social platforms, held a brainstorming session where they discussed concepts such as billing for advertising or charging business users for premium tools and services.<\/p>\n<p>To hear more about these strategies, \u201cPower Lunch\u201d anchor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/15838214\/\">Michelle Caruso-Cabrera<\/a> brought a TV crew to an HBS classroom on Monday (April 12) to conduct live interviews with Piskorski and several students. Caruso-Cabrera spoke first to Piskorski, who discussed the importance of social networks, and his course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Competing with Social Networks\u2019 teaches students how to develop social strategies and use social platforms for profit,\u201d he said. \u201cIt goes well beyond what has already been implemented and asks students to innovate and develop new solutions they can execute after they graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the next segment, the students summarized their Twitter business plans in a way familiar to every Twitter user \u2014 in up to 140 characters. They suggested the company \u201ccapture the value of real-time data through ads, analytics, and premium tools. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Second-year students Adam Ludwin, Debbie Rosenbaum, and Oliver Bladek then weighed in on the pros and cons of each potential Twitter revenue model.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvertising is a proven business model on the Web, and Twitter is in the unique position of being able to integrate ads into real-time conversations,\u201d Ludwin told the CNBC anchor. \u201cThe big question is how much this is worth, and whether what someone has posted on Twitter in real time is worth more than what authoritative sources say, which is why Google\u2019s search results are valuable to advertisers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether students are going into technology-based careers or not, Ludwin said, social media make up a marketing channel that is growing rapidly and is here to stay. \u201cBusiness leaders can\u2019t afford to ignore Twitter and the wave of user-generated content that now so clearly influences the direction of products and services.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When CNBC\u2019s show \u201cPower Lunch\u201d wanted to gather predictions about Twitter\u2019s future business model, the program\u2019s hosts decided to ask a group of Harvard Business School (HBS) students who follow the economic side of social media.
