It&#8217;ll have an impressive 4,000 compact homes,<br \/>\nplus commercial space and 1,300 acres of parks and greenery. It&#8217;s also got a<br \/>\nhigh-profile engineer&#8212;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princeofwales.gov.uk\/\">Prince of<br \/>\nWales<\/a>, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princes-foundation.org\/\">Foundation for the Built Environment<\/a> is building it on a brownfield formerly occupied by a BP oil refinery.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The idea is to unite<br \/>\nthe best of British village traditions with 21st century sustainability<br \/>\nprinciples. The BBC has a well-produced video with glitzy simulations of the completed<br \/>\nvillage and an interview with Prince Charles about his commitment to &#8220;a return<br \/>\nof human values to architecture.&#8221; Sadly, it&#8217;s not embeddable, but it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/ThePrincesFoundation#p\/u\/0\/8_jvC39sxow\">available<br \/>\non Youtube<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Most of us will never<br \/>\nlive in new towns built from the ground up. And they certainly have a spotty<br \/>\ntrack record (see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2010\/04\/abu-dhabis-green-desert-pipe-dream\/38476\/\">latest<br \/>\ntrouble<\/a> for Abu Dhabi&#8217;s Masdar City). But these sorts of projects&#8212;from the<br \/>\nsleepy, pastel-hued <a href=\"http:\/\/fray.slate.com\/id\/2160718\/\">Seaside,<br \/>\nFlorida<\/a>, to the futuristic, $35 billion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/magazine\/142\/the-new-new-urbanism.html\">Songdo,<br \/>\nKorea<\/a>&#8212;can show us what&#8217;s possible, and they&#8217;re fun to think about.
