It\u2019s based on the notion that the usage of diesel fuel corresponds to trucking activity and that trucking activity, in turn, matches up closely with the real level of economic growth. <\/p>\n<p>The nice thing about the index is that it provides a nearly instantaneous read on the state of business\u2014and right now the reading shows the U.S. economy grew at a 4% rate in the first quarter, well above the 2.9% consensus of most economists.<\/p>\n<p>This is good news, but Ed Leamer, chief economist for the index, says the growth should be put in context. GDP growth would have to reach at least 5% to drive meaningful change in unemployment.
