{"id":529155,"date":"2010-04-15T14:21:12","date_gmt":"2010-04-15T18:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/?p=14063"},"modified":"2010-04-15T14:21:12","modified_gmt":"2010-04-15T18:21:12","slug":"iceland-volcano-eruption-making-an-ash-of-itself-bad-astronomy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/529155","title":{"rendered":"Iceland volcano eruption making an ash of itself | Bad Astronomy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull has erupted for the second time this month, sending a long plume of ash across the north Atlantic into the UK, <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/twistedphysics.typepad.com\/cocktail_party_physics\/2010\/04\/what-an-ash.html\">enough to disrupt air traffic there<\/a>! <\/p>\n<p>NASA&#8217;s Terra satellite <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/topics\/earth\/features\/iceland-volcano-plume.html\">caught the plume<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/topics\/earth\/features\/iceland-volcano-plume.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/files\/2010\/04\/terra_iceland_volcano.jpg\" alt=\"terra_iceland_volcano\" title=\"terra_iceland_volcano\" width=\"610\" height=\"474\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14064\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can easily see the plume extending from Iceland across the ocean. Boston.com&#8217;s <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bigpicture\/2010\/04\/icelands_disruptive_volcano.html\">The Big Picture<\/a> has dramatic and beautiful shots of the volcano as well.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen a few volcanoes in my time, but I&#8217;ve never witnessed an actual eruption. I&#8217;d really like to&#8230; from a safe distance. This particular eruption is likely to be a big pain to a lot of people for quite some time; there have already been floods and evacuations due to the activity. I feel badly for those folks affected, but I also can&#8217;t help but gasp in awe at the beauty of events like these.
