has just won a $3 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to build <a title=\"RiverSphere website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.riverweb.org\/index.html\" >RiverSphere<\/a>, a renewable energy center that will focus on developing new <a title=\"hydrokinetic power on wikipedia.com\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Low_head_hydro_power\" >hydrokinetic turbines<\/a>.\u00a0 The project includes floating barge facilities that will be available to private technology companies for <a title=\"tulane press release\" href=\"http:\/\/tulane.edu\/news\/releases\/pr_04132010.cfm\" >testing prototype hydrokinetic turbines<\/a> in the slow moving currents of the Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"cleantechnica.com article\" href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2010\/01\/10\/radio-toting-fish-give-thumbs-up-to-clean-hydrokinetic-power\/\" >Hydrokinetic turbines<\/a> are emerging as a more sustainable way to draw power from water, compared to conventional hydropower which involves building dams to create intense water pressure.\u00a0 Hydrokinetic turbines can operate on the available current in natural waterways as well as <a title=\"cleantechnica.com article\" href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2010\/01\/18\/a-man-a-plan-a-canalhydrokinetic-power\/\" >canals and other manmade streams<\/a>, and they can be tethered in place with minimal disruption of the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<h3> <a
