I\u2019ve written about the <a href=\"http:\/\/blandinonbroadband.org\/2010\/02\/15\/why-do-farmers-need-broadband\/\">importance of broadband<\/a> to farming communities before. There was a national research report that came out last summer (<a href=\"http:\/\/blandinonbroadband.org\/2009\/08\/19\/broadband-good-for-rural-areas\/\">Internet\u2019s Value for Rural America<\/a>) that also highlighted some specific benefits of broadband in rural area \u2013 benefits such as telemedicine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blandinonbroadband.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/boy-on-farm-and-laptop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3316\" title=\"boy on farm and laptop\" src=\"http:\/\/blandinonbroadband.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/boy-on-farm-and-laptop.jpg?w=113&#038;h=170\" alt=\"\" width=\"113\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a>The Blandin Foundation maintains a whole toolkit of broadband applications that benefit individuals, families, business and communities. The <a href=\"http:\/\/blandinonbroadband.org\/2009\/08\/19\/broadband-good-for-rural-areas\/\">toolkit<\/a> is divided into five categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/broadband.blandinfoundation.org\/toolkit\/applications-detail.php?intResourceID=134\">Consumers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/broadband.blandinfoundation.org\/toolkit\/applications-detail.php?intResourceID=147\">Business<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/broadband.blandinfoundation.org\/toolkit\/applications-detail.php?intResourceID=144\">Education<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/broadband.blandinfoundation.org\/toolkit\/applications-detail.php?intResourceID=145\">Government<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/broadband.blandinfoundation.org\/toolkit\/applications-detail.php?intResourceID=135\">Health care<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each category contains a range of subcategories (such as teleradiology) that lead to a number of links to specific applications. Some applications are available online \u2013 some for free; others are descriptions of application or services that may be fee-based or not targeting single users (such as hospital systems). But browsing through the categories will give you an idea of some of the advantages the MIRC communities will be learning about and deploying over the next few years.
