But a new analysis warns that  scientists don&#8217;t fully understand where all that heat is going.<\/p>\n<p>They can&#8217;t explain where about half the heat that has built up on  Earth in recent years <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sindhtoday.net\/news\/2\/127997.htm\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sindhtoday.net\/imgs\/3\/satellite_1066442.jpg\" align=\"left\" width=\"128\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a>has gone, warn Kevin Trenberth and John Fasullo,  researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.<\/p>\n<p>That  inability to balance the Earth&#8217;s &#8220;energy budget&#8221; will make it harder to  weigh the merits of policies to fight climate change and determine which  natural events are driven by warming, the pair say in a &#8220;Perspectives&#8221;  essay published in the latest issue of the journal <em>Science<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers  are able to track overall changes in the amount of energy coming in and  out of the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere using satellites. They know that the  amount of energy coming to Earth outweighs the amount leaving &#8212; and the  leftover energy is driving global warming.<\/p>\n<p>But the problem,  according to Trenberth and Fasullo, is that researchers have trouble  pinpointing which parts of the Earth are storing heat.<\/p>\n<p>The  planet&#8217;s oceans absorb about 90 percent of incoming energy in the form  of heat, but measurements collected between 2004 and 2008 show that the  rate at which oceans are absorbing heat is slowing, even as emissions of  heat-trapping gases have risen<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/cwire\/2010\/04\/16\/16climatewire-the-difficulty-of-balancing-earths-energy-bu-62508.html?scp=4&amp;sq=energy%20balance&amp;st=cse\" >Read more&gt;&gt; <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"akst_link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthportal.org\/news\/?p=3290&amp;akst_action=share-this\"  title=\"E-mail this, post to del.icio.us, etc.\" id=\"akst_link_3290\" class=\"akst_share_link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Share This<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York Times: Greenhouse gases emitted by human activities help trap more heat in the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere, warming the planet.
