{"id":535137,"date":"2010-04-20T04:35:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-20T08:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:feeds2.feedburner.com:\/\/0361c8a7cf53f61721cebe5658dd5d9d"},"modified":"2010-04-20T04:35:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-20T08:35:00","slug":"when-was-the-concept-of-childhood-first-invented","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/535137","title":{"rendered":"When Was The Concept Of Childhood First Invented?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although most people take the existence of categories such as &#8220;children&#8221; and &#8220;teenagers&#8221; for granted, the entire notion of childhood is a relatively new phenomenon. <\/p>\n<div class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blurtit.com\/var\/question\/q\/q3\/q37\/q371\/q3715\/q371511_46839_396_4477244886_6393a7dcf5.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blurtit.com\/css\/common\/cc.png\" style=\"vertical-align:text-bottom;width:16px;height:16px;border:0;\" title=\"Creative Commons License\"\/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/47182952@N03\/\" >GypsyFae<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Prior to the 18th century, children were widely seen in European societies as &#8220;little adults.&#8221; Rather than being dressed in specially tailored children&#8217;s clothing, young adults wore the same clothes as their seniors, only in smaller sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Childhood, however, became a category in the late 18th century and early 19th century, when professionals realized that children represented a new market for a number of services, such as schools, playgrounds, toys and clothing. <\/p>\n<p>In 18th and 19th century Europe, there was a prevalent belief among society&#8217;s upper crust that working-class parents did not care for their children as much as middle and upper class parents did. Middle-class parents often believed that they valued children the most and treated them best. A frequently recited refrain among middle-class parents when referring to children was to talk of the &#8220;economically useless, emotionally priceless child.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the early 19th century, children ceased to be &#8220;little adults,&#8221; and thus the least important members of a household who would be expected to perform child labour, and instead became the recipients of parental love.<\/p>\n<p>The first historical studies of childhood and the changing perception of parents and children were produced in the early 1970s.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/Blurtit\/~4\/HmwR1cnVAyc\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although most people take the existence of categories such as &#8220;children&#8221; and &#8220;teenagers&#8221; for granted, the entire notion of childhood is a relatively new phenomenon.
