The Danziger Bridge<br \/>\nshootings are among a string of violent post-Katrina police encounters<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ve investigated in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/law-disorder\">PBS &#8220;Frontline&#8221;<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/crime\/law_and_disorder\/index.ssf\">New Orleans<br \/>\nTimes-Picayune<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOfficer Robert Barrios, who was charged with conspiring to obstruct<br \/>\njustice, became the fourth police officer charged in the case, and the<br \/>\nfifth person overall. Three former officers have already pleaded guilty<br \/>\nto charges related to the shooting. Barrios <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/crime\/index.ssf\/2010\/04\/nopd_officer_resigns_after_bec.html\">reportedly<br \/>\n resigned<\/a> from the force shortly after being charged.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMarion David Ryder, a civilian who impersonated a police officer the day<br \/>\n of the shooting, also was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/nola\/story\/fourth-person-indicted-in-danziger-bridge-shootings\">indicted<br \/>\n this month<\/a> on charges of lying to federal agents and unlawful<br \/>\npossession of a handgun.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe charge against Barrios came in a bill of information, which is only<br \/>\nallowed in cases where the defendant has waived the requirement that a<br \/>\ngrand jury issue charges. That usually indicates the defendant is<br \/>\ncooperating with the case.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Times-Picayune <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nola.com\/crime\/index.ssf\/2010\/04\/nopd_officer_resigns_after_bec.html\">reports<\/a><br \/>\n that Barrios was in the back of a vehicle with four other officers when<br \/>\n they responded to a report that officers were shot while on Interstate<br \/>\n10, which is parallel with the Danziger Bridge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ryan Knutson, ProPublica Federal investigators charged another New Orleans police officer in connection to the Danziger Bridge shootings, in which two civilians were killed and four were wounded in the days after Hurricane Katrina.
