The power of visual storytelling and the paradigm shift created by both the democratization of filmmaking and the advent of social networking tools brought together academics, movie industry professionals, and budding change agents \u2014 demographic groups not accustomed to rubbing elbows \u2014 for film screenings and a lively conversation about the possibilities of film as a vehicle for social activism.<\/p>\n
Sponsored by the Harvard Kennedy School\u2019s Center for Public Leadership<\/a>, the inaugural Gleitsman Social Change Film Forum (April 16-17) featured screenings of two documentaries from this year\u2019s Sundance Film Festival. \u201cCountdown to Zero\u201d examines the risk of nuclear proliferation, nuclear terrorism, and accidental nuclear exchanges. \u201cA Small Act\u201d describes how an anonymous gift to help educate a boy in Kenya created <\/strong>a ripple effect, with one act of kindness leading to another and then another, in a widening circle of impact.<\/p>\n Faculty members from across the University joined in the panel discussions, including: David Ager<\/a>, codirector of undergraduate studies and lecturer on sociology at the College; Graham Allison<\/a>, director of the Kennedy School\u2019s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs<\/a> and Douglas Dillon Professor of Government; Peter Galison<\/a>, documentary filmmaker and Joseph Pellegrino University Professor of the History of Science and of Physics; David R. Gergen<\/a>, director of the Center for Public Leadership and Public Service Professor of Public Leadership; Rod Kramer<\/a>, visiting professor of public policy at Harvard Kennedy School;<\/a> and Robb Moss<\/a>, filmmaker and Rudolph Arnheim Lecturer on Filmmaking.<\/p>\n Film industry panelists included Lawrence Bender, a three-time Academy Award nominee who produced Al Gore\u2019s \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth,\u201d \u201cInglourious Basterds,\u201d \u201cPulp Fiction,\u201d and \u201cGood Will Hunting,\u201d as well as Participant Media\u2019s \u201cCountdown to Zero\u201d; Bill Guttentag, who won Oscars for \u201cTwin Towers,\u201d a 2003 documentary about 9\/11, and \u201cYou Don\u2019t Have to Die,\u201d a 1988 documentary about a boy\u2019s battle against cancer; Diana Barrett, former Harvard Business School professor and founder of The Fledgling Fund<\/a>, which incorporates innovative uses of media to build social activism campaigns; Patti Lee, producer of \u201cA Small Act\u201d; Diane Weyermann, executive producer of \u201cCountdown to Zero\u201d; Tiffany Shlain, filmmaker and founder of the Webby Awards<\/a>; Liana Schwarz, senior vice president for social action at Participant Media<\/a>; and Caroline Libresco, senior programmer at the Sundance Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIt seems like every young leader wants to be a social change agent,\u201d said Gergen during the open panel on April 16. \u201cAnd visual imagery is very important to this generation \u2014 but they don\u2019t know much about the film industry.\u201d<\/p>\n The ensuing conversations touched on a range of topics, including:<\/strong><\/p>\n The changing understanding of what constitutes a film<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cConnected,\u201d a film that Shlain is making about systems thinking, will ultimately exist as an 80-minute feature, in a 10-minute version for educators, and in an even shorter version for viral dissemination. \u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing here is a paradigm shift,\u201d said Barrett. \u201cTiffany is helping us rethink what we mean by a film.\u201d<\/p>\n Brain science and the time-tested ingredients of good storytelling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Advances in neuroscientific understanding have shown that <\/strong>\u201cthe brain is more hard-wired for sociability, for engaging with others, and for empathy than we had realized,\u201d said Kramer. \u201cThe brain developed as a visual-auditory sensory processing system, which, when you think about it, is what film does.\u201d A film is successful to the degree that it connects to the audience emotionally, said Guttentag. \u201cStory and character are the two most important elements for helping people connect with a film.\u201d Libresco agreed, adding that the elements of good story making include \u201cgreat characters, each of whose lives has an arc; the layering of multiple stories; beautiful cinematography; and the ability to make audiences cry and laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n New technologies for building an audience for a film<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When \u201cAn Inconvenient Truth\u201d was released in 2006, Twitter didn\u2019t even exist, and Facebook\u2019s potential was just beginning to be understood. Today, these tools enable people to interact immediately with the social issue addressed by a film that moves them. Interactive media also have created \u201ca shift in power,\u201d said Shlain. \u201cAs a filmmaker, you can now have direct access to your audience. You don\u2019t have to work through a distributor.\u201d<\/p>\n Social change films promote \u201caccelerated crowd learning,\u201d said Barrett, borrowing a phrase from Sarah Palin\u2019s recent address to a Tea Party gathering in Boston.
