Star Trek<\/em> icon Leonard Nimoy has announced his retirement from acting.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Nimoy began his acting career in the early 1950s and rose to international fame as Mr. Spock in the sci-fi series. Now the almost 80-year-old star — who has also tasted fame as a director, photographer — is stepping away from the camera.<\/p>\n

“I’ve been doing this professionally for 60 years. I love the idea of going out on a positive note. I’ve had a great, great time,”<\/em> says the Fringe<\/em> actor.<\/p>\n

As for his iconic character Spock, Leonard say he’s happy to let Heroes<\/em> actor Zachary Quinto take over the reigns from now on. Quinto turned in a well-received performance as Spock in last year’s Star Trek<\/em> prequel.<\/p>\n

“He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue.”<\/em><\/p>\n
