{"id":540359,"date":"2010-04-22T08:55:17","date_gmt":"2010-04-22T12:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"tag:contentnext.com,2010-04-22:article\/419-nokia-sales-up-but-symbian-delay-blunts-iphone-counter-attack"},"modified":"2010-04-22T08:55:17","modified_gmt":"2010-04-22T12:55:17","slug":"nokia-sales-up-but-symbian-delay-blunts-iphone-counter-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/540359","title":{"rendered":"Nokia Sales Up, But Symbian Delay Blunts iPhone Counter-Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"border: 1px solid silver; padding: 4px; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 0; float: left;\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/moconews.net\/article\/419-nokia-sales-up-but-symbian-delay-blunts-iphone-counter-attack\/\" title=\"Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo\" class=\"image_link image\" id=\"86931_2219\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/paidcontent.org\/images\/editorial\/f_small\/olli-pekka-kallasvuo-s.jpg\" alt=\"Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo\" width=\"170\" height=\"113\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The differences are clear &#8211; Apple&#8217;s selling phones and associated content <em>faster<\/em> than Nokia.<\/p>\n<p>Nokia (<a href=\"http:\/\/finance.paidcontent.org\/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&#038;Ticker=NOK\" class=\"ticker\" title=\"NOK\">NYSE: NOK<\/a>) smartphone shipments grew by 50 percent in the year&#8217;s first three months, compared to <a href=\"http:\/\/moconews.net\/article\/419-how-the-iphone-is-juicing-apples-stellar-financial-results-\/\" title=\"131 percent more iPhones\">131 percent more iPhones<\/a> reported this week.<\/p>\n<p>But Nokia isn&#8217;t juicing the <em>uses<\/em> for these smartphones &#8211; sales from services (ie. Nokia&#8217;s Ovi suite) are 12 percent <em>down<\/em> from last year at \u20ac148 million.\n<\/p>\n<p>Nokia still shifts <em>more<\/em> phones than Apple (<a href=\"http:\/\/finance.paidcontent.org\/paidcontent?Page=QUOTE&#038;Ticker=AAPL\" class=\"ticker\" title=\"AAPL\">NSDQ: AAPL<\/a>) &#8211; it sold 21.5 million &#8220;converged mobile devices&#8221; in the quarter, compared with 8.75 million iPhones.<\/p>\n<p>But the first phone powered by Symbian^3 &#8211; the upgrade that&#8217;s critical to improving an OS that&#8217;s now seen as relatively clunky &#8211; is now forecast to ship in Q3, delayed from Q2. CEO  Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told analysts this is &#8220;close to our milestone date&#8221; &#8211; but shares took a dive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>It&#8217;s a painful thing to delay something a bit<\/strong>,&#8221; Kallasvuo said. &#8220;But meeting the quality requirements is the right thing to do. It will be more intuitive, more fun and faster.&#8221; Analysts piled in with unflattering questions, like: &#8220;Can Nokia be fast and big, or just big?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It must be both, Kallasvuo said. &#8220;We are not going for the high end with Symbian only, but also going for the even <em>higher<\/em> end with Maemo,&#8221; he added, somewhat optimistically, referring to the Linux-based smartphone OS.<\/p>\n<p>Operating profit bounced back 787 percent to \u20ac488 million on three percent higher net sales of \u20ac9.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>For its coming Q2, Nokia expects 10 percent higher mobile volume across the industry, but expects no higher market share for itself compared with last year.<\/p>\n<p>One thing&#8217;s going okay &#8211; sales from the Navteq mapping subsidiary are up 41 percent, and Nokia has got 10 million downloads for the free GPS navigation service since introducing in January.<\/p>\n<p>North America continues to be Nokia&#8217;s slimmest market &#8211; devices and services sales down 27 percent over the year to just \u20ac219 million, and its share of the market down 21 percent to just 2.7 percent.
