Massey Energy, the<br \/>\ncriminally unsafe coal mining and intimidation company, <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonindependent.com\/82941\/in-coal-county-a-culture-of-fear\">refuses<br \/>\nto give workers time off<\/a> to attend the funerals of friends who died in<br \/>\nMassey&#8217;s Upper Big Branch Mine, the Washington Independent reports:<\/p>\n<p>Massey Energy, the Virginia-based coal giant that runs the<br \/>\nUpper Big Branch Mine, has denied time off for miners to attend their friends&#8217;<br \/>\nfunerals; has rejected makeshift memorials outside the mine site; and, in at<br \/>\nleast one case, <strong>required a worker to go<br \/>\non shift even though the fate of a relative&#8212;one of the victims of the April 5<br \/>\ndisaster&#8212;remained unknown at the time<\/strong>, according to some family members<br \/>\nand other sources familiar with those episodes. In short, the company might be<br \/>\ntaking heat for putting profits and efficiency above its workers, but it<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t appear to have changed its tune in the wake of the worst mining tragedy<br \/>\nin 40 years.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;They told my<br \/>\nhusband, &lsquo;You&#8217;ve got a job to do and you&#8217;re gonna do it,&#8217;&#8221;<\/strong> said the wife of<br \/>\none Massey miner, referring to the funerals he&#8217;s missed this month for friends<br \/>\nwho died in the blast. <strong>&#8220;What else are we<br \/>\ngonna do?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Such anecdotes aren&#8217;t easy to come by. <strong>Massey&#8212;the top coal producer in Appalachia&#8212;has built a reputation<br \/>\nof intimidating its workers into a type of lock-step compliance that most often<br \/>\ntakes the form of silence<\/strong>, particularly when the subject revolves around<br \/>\nsafety in the company&#8217;s mines. The reason is clear: Massey is the economic engine in parts of West Virginia, and there&#8217;s a lingering fear among<br \/>\nmany workers that any grumbling could leave them unemployed. Some former<br \/>\nemployees said this week that the reluctance of Upper Big Branch miners to<br \/>\ndiscuss the conditions inside those tunnels prior to the blast is no accident. [Emphasis mine.]<\/p>\n<p>Bet the offshore<br \/>\ndrilling folks are hoping this takes some attention away from the rig that<br \/>\ncollapsed into the Gulf of Mexico today.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Our running tally of fossil-fuel<br \/>\nindustry disasters of late:<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-22-burning-oil-rig-sinks-into-gulf-of-mexico\/\">oil rig explosion<\/a>,<br \/>\nwhich injured 17 workers, left 11 missing, and is spilling crude oil and<br \/>\npossibly diesel into the Gulf.<br \/>\nThe awful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/04\/16\/AR2010041604731.html\">coal-mine<br \/>\nexplosion<\/a> that killed 29 men under the criminal safety record of <br \/>\nMassey<br \/>\nEnergy CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-09-grist-hating-on-don-blankenship-before-it-was-cool\">Don<br \/>\nBlankenship<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/World\/Asia-Pacific\/2010\/0413\/Anger-in-Australia-mounts-after-ship-grounds-on-Great-Barrier-Reef\">crash<br \/>\nof<br \/>\n a coal freighter<\/a> into the fragile Great Barrier Reef as it tried to<br \/>\n take<br \/>\na shortcut from Australian mines to Chinese furnaces.<br \/>\nThe Tesoro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/hotstories\/6941057.html\">oil <br \/>\nrefinery explosion<\/a> that killed five workers in Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/04\/06\/louisiana-oil-spill-about_n_527888.html\">spillage<br \/>\nof<br \/>\n 18,000 gallons of crude oil<\/a> from a Chevron into a canal in the <br \/>\nDelta<br \/>\nNational Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the people<br \/>\nmaking money off these businesses are the ones fighting hardest against a<br \/>\nclean-energy bill.
