We<br \/>\nknow the young and the hip eat healthier and ride bikes more often than their<br \/>\npeers and yadda yadda yadda.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s nothing like getting even with the cool kids and catching them in un-green moments. (How cool do you think a bunch of future environmental journalists were in high school?) And there are certain trends even the trendy should avoid.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/istolethetv\/3965796483\/\"><\/a>Photo courtesy istolethetv via Flickr<strong>Party habits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Ah, the <br \/>\n21st century American <br \/>\nlumberjack&mdash;not to be confused with his <br \/>\npredecessor. Although they look quite similar (flannels, beards, unwashed hair), <br \/>\nthe lumberjack of olden days could chop down <br \/>\nmaybe one pine with hours of hairy manpower. The modern version can level four square meters of rainforest with just the <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-03-08-cocaine-addicts-are-snorting-their-way-to-a-warmer-world\" title=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-03-08-cocaine-addicts-are-snorting-their-way-to-a-warmer-world\">snort <br \/>\nof his nose<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Urban habits<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/raychelnbits\/3747313423\/\"><\/a>To cop this look, see your grandfather&#8217;s closet.Photo courtesy Raychel Mendez via Flickr<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>A true hipster scours Goodwill racks for something quirky<br \/>\nand ironic that vaguely fits them. For the lazy hipster, there&#8217;s always Urban<br \/>\nOutfitters. UO has some obvious, ridiculous problems&mdash;what with its throwing out bags of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2010\/01\/digging-into-urban-outfitters-perfectly-good-trash.php\">destroyed, unused clothing<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/demicouture.ca\/2008\/10\/08\/urban-outfitters-and-anthropologie-supports-the-republican-party-shitty-but-true\/\">Republican-lovin&#8217; president<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stylelist.com\/2007\/04\/12\/does-urban-outfitters-steal-their-designs\/\">stealing of artist&#8217;s ideas<\/a>. Then there are long-term sustainability issues that arise from mass-made, fake kitsch and shoddy vintage knockoffs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ret0dd\/3391041282\/\"><\/a><strong>Photo courtesy ret0dd via Flickr<\/strong><strong>Clothing habits<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of clothing, we have to point out the unsustainability of trends. Lensless glasses, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/andrewcoulterenright\/5747857\/\">peace scarves that don&#8217;t keep you warm<\/a>, headbands, strange little hats. All of these things serve no purpose and just end up in a landfill. Do you suppose there&#8217;s an entire ocean garbage patch made entirely of <a href=\"http:\/\/sohotsofresh.blogspot.com\/2008\/04\/httpwww.html\">shutter shades<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eating habits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kofoed\/4532288525\/\"><\/a>But coke will stunt your growth, little dude!Photo courtesy kofoed via Flickr<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We know you&#8217;ve been a vegetarian since age 15 and a vegan<br \/>\noff and on. How could we forget? You&#8217;ve mentioned it every time we&#8217;ve gone out to eat and whenever<br \/>\nwe introduced you to one of our friends. Which makes it even more likely that<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ll slap those Doritos right out of your hands. A meatless diet doesn&#8217;t<br \/>\nautomatically mean an ethical diet. So lose the<br \/>\nholier-than-thou &#8216;tude, dude.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cig habits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kidpaparazzi\/3481789449\/\"><\/a>Rebel without a cause.Photo courtesy Kid Paprazzi via Flickr<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>At least <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2007\/02\/smoking_environ.php\">4.5 trillion non-biodegradable cigarettes<\/a> are thrown away every year. Best-case scenario, they end up in a landfill. If they end up stomped below a pair of Converse, those icky chemicals (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2007\/02\/smoking_environ.php\">and some radioactive material!<\/a>) can <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-21-go-green-this-earth-day-quit-smoking\/\">harm the water supply and soil<\/a> we all hold so dear. So quit smoking or at least dispose of your Parliaments <a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-08-smokers-get-greenbutts-in-gear-with-compostable-cigarettes\">properly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2250893\/?wpisrc=eDialog\"><strong>Fixed habits<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/lunereve\/4256258490\/\"><\/a>Photo courtesy astroSaluki via Flickr<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t mean to knock a good habit. Bikes will always be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.environment.ucf.edu\/bikepath\/27%20Reasons%20to%20Bike.htm\">a better option<\/a> than cars. It&#8217;s still a shame to see so many great Schwinns and Peugeots go to waste. We know, we know&mdash;you hate the sound of coasting and find single speeds boring.
