That trend will continue as computers become integrated into more aspects of life in the developed world, and as more people in the developing world enter the consumer marketplace \u2014 unless electronic devices become significantly smaller, lighter and more energy efficient.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 15.75pt; letter-spacing: 0pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: normal; mso-font-kerning: 0pt;\">Yes, there is always a catch.&nbsp;&nbsp; Although some researchers have developed methods for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2009\/10\/30\/nanomaterial-being-produced-by-the-ton\/\"  title=\"cleantechnica.com article\"><span style=\"color: #0aa1dd;\">producing graphene in bulk<\/span><\/a>, the material is difficult to manipulate with precision.&nbsp; One possible solution has been devised at the <st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">Illinois<\/st1:placename> at <st1:city w:st=\"on\"><st1:place w:st=\"on\">Chicago<\/st1:place><\/st1:city>, where researchers have used nano-sized&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/topic.cfm?id=water\"><span style=\"color: #0aa1dd;\">water<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;droplets as&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2009\/12\/19\/water-droplet-chaperons-could-usher-in-new-era-of-graphene-nanodevices\/\"  title=\"cleantechnica.com article\"><span style=\"color: #0aa1dd;\">chaperones to coax graphene into complex shapes<\/span><\/a>.&nbsp; At the <st1:place w:st=\"on\"><st1:placetype w:st=\"on\">University<\/st1:placetype> of <st1:placename w:st=\"on\">South Florida<\/st1:placename><\/st1:place>, researchers were able to construct nanowires by bonding two half-sheets of graphene edge to edge.&nbsp; Instead of forming a seamless whole, the two halves are separated by a defect that emerges in the atomic structure of the graphene sheet, forming a continuous line just a few atoms across.&nbsp; The researchers were able to confirm that this line functions as a nanowire, with its own periodic atomic structure and metallic properties.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 15.75pt; text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"background: white; mso-outline-level: 3; text-align: justify;\"><i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #33302d;
