Hope for the eleven men left missing in the  explosion has dropped sharply. Grist\u2019s Jonathan Hiskes notes that this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-21-workers-found-safe-but-gulf-oil-rig-in-danger-of-tipping\/\">comes  within weeks of<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-23515\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2013 The awful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/04\/16\/AR2010041604731.html\">coal-mine  explosion<\/a> that killed 29 men under the criminal safety record of  Massey Energy CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grist.org\/article\/2010-04-09-grist-hating-on-don-blankenship-before-it-was-cool\">Don  Blankenship<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u2013 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/World\/Asia-Pacific\/2010\/0413\/Anger-in-Australia-mounts-after-ship-grounds-on-Great-Barrier-Reef\">crash  of a coal freighter<\/a> into the fragile Great Barrier Reef as it tried  to take a shortcut from Australian mines to Chinese furnaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 The Tesoro <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/hotstories\/6941057.html\">oil  refinery explosion<\/a> that killed five workers in Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/04\/06\/louisiana-oil-spill-about_n_527888.html\">spillage  of 18,000 gallons of crude oil<\/a> from a Chevron into a canal in the  Delta National Wildlife Refuge, also in Louisiana.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The cold reality is that fossil fuel production, just like its  combustion, is neither clean nor safe, despite the endless propaganda  from the mouthpieces of Big Oil and King Coal:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.heritage.org\/2009\/01\/23\/we-still-need-more-energy-supply-in-america\/\">Heritage  Foundation<\/a>:  Since gas prices have fallen from record levels in the  summer, drilling has taken a backseat to concerns over the economy.  Allowing and expanding safe domestic energy production will not only  help in keeping prices low but it will also help stimulate the economy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/consumerenergyalliance.org\/calls-to-action\/support-energy-development-in-the-atlantic-ocean\/\">Consumer  Energy Alliance<\/a>: The federal government must recognize the  tremendous economic opportunity that safe and responsible offshore  energy exploration presents to the citizens of coastal Atlantic states  and the nation at large.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.policyarchive.org\/handle\/10207\/bitstreams\/8537.pdf\">Heritage  Foundation<\/a>: Thanks to technological advances, offshore energy  production has become very safe, as is witnessed by the excellent record  of recent years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/energy.dow.com\/energy_plan\/offshore_oil.htm\">Dow  Energy<\/a>: Congress should not re-impose the moratoria on offshore  drilling, but create a statutory construct under which drilling can go  forward in a safe and effective manner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.energytomorrow.org\/2010\/03\/obamas-offshore-drilling-plan-is-a-positive-development.html\">Energy  Tomorrow<\/a>: The oil and natural gas industry has a proven track  record of safe oil and natural gas development and the majority of the  American people recognize this by supporting greater development for the  benefit of their communities, their states and their nation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/2009\/11\/19\/ier-technology-innovation-remains-key-to-safe-increased-offshore-energy-development\/\">Institute  for Energy Research<\/a>: Offshore energy exploration and production in  the United States is safe and environmentally sound. Over the past 50  years, the U.S. oil and gas industry has developed innovative, 21st  century technologies and exploration techniques that are efficient, pose  little threat to the environment, and ensure worker safety.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.criticalbias.com\/2010\/03\/31\/virginia-ready-to-begin-offshore-energy-exploration\/\">Eric  Cantor<\/a> (R-VA): I am committed to continue working with Secretary  Salazar as well as our state and federal partners to ensure the safe and  responsible production of American made energy and the creation of much  needed jobs in the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"http:\/\/epw.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Minority.Blogs&amp;ContentRecord_id=A139ED8D-802A-23AD-4C09-34F704339D5B\">Jim  Inhofe<\/a> (R-OK): Offshore drilling is environmentally safe.
